Abstract: Methods and apparatus for vacuum forming and subsequently applying topical coatings fiber-based food containers. The slurry includes one or more of an embedded moisture barrier, vapor barrier, and oil barrier, and the topical coating comprises one or more of a vapor barrier, a moisture barrier, an oil barrier, and an oxygen barrier. For food containers having deep sidewalls, a spray coating system includes a first nozzle for applying a full cone spray pattern to the bottom surface of the container, and a second nozzle for applying a hollow cone spray pattern to the inside surfaces of the side walls.

Abstract: Processes for imparting oil and grease resistance to paper products. In some embodiments, the process can include combining a plurality of fibers and water to produce a slurry; forming the slurry into a wet web; pressing and draining the wet web to produce a wet sheet; and drying the wet sheet to produce a dried sheet. A sizing composition and a barrier compound can independently be applied to at least one of the slurry, the wet web, the wet sheet, and the dried sheet. The sizing composition can include one or more alkenyl succinic anhydride compounds. The barrier compound can include a polyolefin dispersion, a styrene acrylate emulsion, a sucrose ester, a modified starch, styrene maleic anhydride, an ethylene acrylic acid dispersion, a styrene acrylic acid, a polyvinyl alcohol, an ethylene vinyl alcohol, or a mixture thereof. The dried sheet can have an average KIT Value of at least 3.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a molded body, includes a deposition step of depositing a mixture containing fibers and a starch in air; a moisturizing step of applying water to the mixture; and a molding step of forming a molded body by heating and pressurizing the mixture to which the water is applied. In the method described above, the starch has a setback viscosity (η50-η93) of 40 to 200 mPa·s, the setback viscosity (η50-η93) being obtained by measurement performed in accordance with the following measurement methods (1) to (4) using a rapid visco analyzer (RVA). The measurement is performed such that (1) after a water suspension containing the starch at 25 percent by mass is charged in the RVA as a measurement sample, the temperature thereof is increased to 50° C. and then maintained for one minute; (2) the temperature of the measurement sample is increased from 50° C. to 93° C. over 4 minutes and then maintained at 93° C. for 7 minutes; (3) the temperature of the measurement sample is decreased from 93° C. to 50° C. over 4 minutes and then maintained at 50° C. for 3 minutes; and (4) in the above (2) and (3), a rotational speed of a measurement paddle of the RVA is set to 960 rpm for 10 seconds after the start of the viscosity measurement and is then set to 160 rpm 10 seconds thereafter.

Abstract: An oil resistant article is described that does not contain any fluorocarbon compounds. The oil resistant article includes a basesheet formed from pulp fibers. The basesheet is coated on at least one surface with an oil resistant coating. The basesheet is formed without having to use any highly refined fibers. Various chemical treatments are incorporated into the basesheet and the oil resistant coating is formed from particularly selected polymers that produces an oil resistant article having a relatively high permeability and excellent oil resistant properties.
