Abstract: A polystyrene-based chalcone including units of a 1-(2H-1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-3-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-(2E)-propane-1-one and units of a 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. The units of the 1-(2H-1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-3-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-(2E)-propane-1-one and the units of the 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate are in a matrix of a polystyrene. A process for preparing the polystyrene-based chalcone and application as a laser medium with fine coating characteristics.

Abstract: A method of making a smart optical material (SOM) including mixing polypropylene in a solvent to form a first solution. The method further includes mixing a zinc salt in 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and heating it to form a second solution. The method further includes mixing rhodamine B and a peroxide into the second solution to form a third solution. The method further includes mixing the third solution into the first solution to form a reaction solution, wherein the peroxide initiates polymerization of the 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate to form poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate). The method further includes separating the SOM from the reaction solution. The SOM has at least two bandgaps, a first bandgap is from 1.4-1.5 eV, and a second bandgap is from 1.8-1.9 eV.

Abstract: A biodegradable filter for the removal of various pollutants, contaminants, or harmful substances from the surrounding air, and a method of fabrication. The filter includes 30% by weight of cellulose nanofibers, 30% by weight of activated carbon, and 20% by weight of polyethylene glycol. The cellulose nanofibers and activated carbon are isolated from date palm biomass, making the filter cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Abstract: A laser device includes a medium container, a gain medium contained in the medium container and optics configured to direct the laser to a sample. The optics preferably include no optical resonator around the gain medium. The gain medium is configured to receive energy to emit a laser and includes a first solvent and a compound dissolved therein. The compound conforms to formula (1): where R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are each independently hydrogen or an alkyl group. The laser media can function in both liquid as well as solid state and has shown a high optical gain of the order of 3.2 cm−1 in pulsed and continuous wave modes.

Abstract: The olive oil-tuned broadband conjugated polymer laser medium includes the conjugated polymer known as poly ((9,9-dihexyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-vinylene)-co-(1-methoxy-4-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-2,5-phenylenevinylene)) or “Poly(FV-co-MEHPV)” at a 90:10 mole ratio. The emission wavelength of the olive oil tuned broadband conjugated polymer laser can be reversibly tuned between 500 nm and 680 nm.
