For the extrusion of a calibrated profile of a thermoplastic polymer onto articles, the polymer, which is melted in an extruder (17), is fed, via a heated pressure hose (22), to an extruder head guided by a robot (5) and, by means of said extruder head, extruded and deposited on the article. At the end of each extrusion operation, the material flow to the extruder head is maintained and, by means of a change-over valve within the extruder head, redirected into an outlet orifice provided in the vicinity of the die orifice until the commencement of the subsequent extrusion operation. The redirected material flow emerges from a pipe connector (29) which is arranged on the extruder head and is coupled to a coupling piece (33). The material collected in this manner may be pelletized and fed back to the feed hopper (16) of the extruder (17).

It is an object of the present invention to obtain an optically transparent nano-dispersed polymer blend extrudate and a transparent resin having a microscopic dispersion structure in which incompatible polymer blend is melted and kneaded, one of resins is formed into a matrix, a size of dispersed phase of the other resin is controlled to 300 nm or less, more preferably 100 nm or less. Extra additive such as a compatibilizer is not added. When the incompatible polymer blend is melted and kneaded using a high shearing and forming apparatus having an inner feedback type screw under a condition that the screw rotation speed is 600 rpm to 3000 rpm, the rotation speed of the inner feedback type screw is increased, the kneading time is set under constant rotation speed, the high shearing forming condition is adjusted, and a structure in which a size of dispersed phase is controlled to 300 nm or less, more preferably 100 nm or less is formed.

At least two traversing measurements of a parameter correlating with the bulb angle are started consecutively on the heat-sensitive plastic sheet synchronously with the positioning of one of the two calender rollers. Like measurement conditions therefore exist and the deviation of the measured values obtained on the basis of the measurements in relation to specified expected values is used to regulate the bulb angle over its width by altering a setting element on the extrusion device.

An extrusion apparatus having a rotor member rotatable within a barrel member longitudinal and cross-sectionally mixes and extrudes thermo-plastic and thermo-setting materials. The apparatus is articulated into sections including a barrel entrance and forcing section, a blending section, and an end discharge section. The barrel entrance and forcing section consists of helical extrusion grooves which terminate at an abrupt rotor to barrel and barrel to rotor material transfers. The blending section recognizes that blending is volumetric i.e. three-dimensional and therefore longitudinal displacement of the material in relation to itself is one of the dimensions. Longitudinal displacement is accomplished in the blending section by providing a double extrusion capacity main extrusion rotor and a single capacity backfeed rotor arranged to recirculate half of the material processed by the main stream rotor. The blending section is followed by the end extrusion section, which at its lead end is provided with rotor to barrel and barrel to rotor material transfers to cross shear the material in two different directions to complete volumetric blending. The material transfers are followed by helical rotor extrusion grooves as required to build extrusion pressure.

In the process, the constituents of the mixture are fed into a twin-screw extruder and are masticated and homogenized therein, with approximately 5% of the mixture being discharged and the remainder being recycled for further homogenization and for mixing with fresh batches of the constituents being fed into the extruder. The recycled mixture is circulated to and returned from a cooled, annular chamber dispersed exteriorly of the chamber of the twin-screw extruder, with the annular chamber having outflow and inflow passages communicating with the interior of the extruder.

Method and apparatus for the extrusion of thermoplastic materials. First and second worm-type extruders are provided, the first being designed to produce a uniformly extrudable material and having a capacity in excess of that of the second. the uniformly extrudable material discharged from the first extruder enters pressure relief and control means from which it is fed into the second extruder, to the extend of its lesser capacity, at a constant pressure. Excess material discharged from the first extruder passes through an orifice and is returned by feedback means to a preferred position in the feb means for the first extruder. The material fed into the second extruder is discharged therefrom at a uniform volumetric extrusion rate, thereby providing a metering effect, and without significant physical or dimensional variations in the extrudate.
