Abstract: A mixer having a discharge screw centrally located between first and second side walls and disposed in a cavity provided in the bottom. The discharge screw has (a) a shaft with a first end that extends through a first end wall and (b) a driven end opposite the first end of the shaft, with the driven end being connected to a motor shaft for rotating the discharge screw in at least one direction. The driven end has a recessed portion that extends into the second end wall of the vessel. The mixer may include a deflector that is fixed to the second end wall and extends toward the first end wall and is located between the mixing blades and the discharge screw.

Abstract: Expandable, blowing agent-containing pellets based on high temperature thermoplastics having a glass transition temperature according to ISO 11357-2-1999 of at least 180° C., wherein the expandable, blowing agent-containing pellets comprise at least one nucleating agent and have a poured density according to DIN ISO 697:1982 in the range from 400 to 900 kg/m3 and a mass in the range from 1 to 5 mg/pellet, processes for production thereof and foam particles obtainable therefrom having a glass transition temperature according to ISO 11357-2-1999 of at least 180° C., wherein the expanded foam particles comprise at least one nucleating agent and have a poured density according to DIN ISO 697:1982 in the range from 10 to 200 kg/m3, and particle foams obtainable therefrom and the use thereof for producing components for aviation.

Abstract: A method of producing a bioplastic granulate on the basis of sunflower seed shells or sunflower seed hulls. In the method, ground sunflower seed shells/sunflower seed hull material is provided, wherein the particle size is in the region of 3 mm or less, preferably in the region of 0.01 to 1 mm, preferably in the region of 0.1 to 0.3 mm. A plastic material is provided, which is compounded with the sunflower seed shells/sunflower seed hull material, wherein the compounding operation is preferably effected in an extruder, preferably a double-screw extruder. The compounded material is chopped at the end of the extruder section with a tool with the addition of water, wherein the water is at a temperature of preferably more than 50° C., preferably about 80 to 90° C., to cool down the compound material. During the compounding operation, the compounding material is subjected to atmospheric degassing and/or vacuum degassing.

Abstract: In one aspect, the invention provides a substantially exfoliated nanocomposite material including starch and hydrophobically modified layered silicate clay. In another aspect, the invention provides packaging made from material including the substantially exfoliated nanocomposite material described above. The nanocomposite material has improved mechanical and rheological properties and reduced sensitivity to moisture in that the rates of moisture update and/or loss are reduced. In another aspect, the invention provides a process for preparing the substantially exfoliated nanocomposite material described above, including a step of mixing the starch in the form of an aqueous gel with the hydrophobic clay in a melt mixing device. In a further aspect, the invention provides a process for preparing the substantially exfoliated nanocomposite material, including the steps of mixing the starch with the hydrophobic clay to form a masterbatch (hereinafter “the masterbatch process”) and mixing the masterbatch with further starch.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a plurality of colors of bulked continuous carpet filament from a single multi-screw extruder which, in various embodiments, comprises: (A) passing PET through an extruder that melts the PET and purifies the resulting PET polymer melt; (B) splitting the extruded polymer melt into a plurality of melt streams and adding a colorant to each of the plurality of melt streams; (C) using one or more static mixers (e.g., thirty six static mixers) to substantially uniformly mix (e.g., homogeneously mix) each of the plurality of melt streams with its respective added colorant; and (D) feed each of the uniformly mixed and colored plurality of melt streams into a respective spinning machines that turns the polymer into filament for use in manufacturing carpet, rugs, and other products.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method for producing isotropized “ready-to-use” polymer pellets or granules that contain completely or substantially relaxed matrix molecules and entangled organic nanofibrils with long aspect ratios that will provide superior properties for the products without high cost. These pellets are cost-effectively produced using industrial-scale fiber spinning or melt-blowing/spun-bond equipment followed by an isotropizing pelletizer. These pellets enable one to mass-produce the micro-fibrillar or nanofibrillar composites with superior mechanical properties, because they are readily usable (“ready-to-use”) for industry-scale mass production systems with a very high throughput over 1000 kg/hr. The organic nanofibrils are well dispersed and entangled in the polymer matrix and have a long aspect ratio ranging hundreds to thousands, to tens of thousands. The nanofibrils are entangled with each other to have proper rheological properties for film or foam processing, and to have good mechanical properties of the final products.

Abstract: A multi-shaft kneading machine includes a channel and two screws rotatable around first axes of rotation. A pair of gate rods sandwich the two screws and are rotatable around second axes of rotation. Each of the pair of gate rods has two recess parts that form respective spaces through which the two screws penetrate. Each of the pair of gate rods has a first contact surface, which comes into surface contact with a screw when a gate rod is rotated to a minimum degree-of-opening position. Large diameter parts are fitted into the groove of the cylinder, and a small diameter part have a radius of curvature equal to half a distance between two second axes of rotation and smaller than a radius of curvature of the large diameter parts. The small diameter parts of the pair of gate rods are in contact with each other.
