The protective yarn has a core unit including a protective material selected from a group consisting of metallic filament, glass, and high tenacity fiber having a tensile strength of at least 7 grams per denier. A cover is applied to the core unit and is adapted for residing adjacent the skin. The cover includes an optically responsive material adapted for absorbing infrared radiation emitted from the human body at a first wavelength and returning the absorbed radiation to the body at a second longer wavelength. This relaxes capillaries and promotes increased blood flow to body parts covered by the article of apparel.

The method includes forming an inner monolithic layer from crystals of beta phase stoichiometric silicon carbide on a carbon substrate in the form of a rod by chemical methylsilane vapor deposition in a sealed tubular hot-wall CVD reactor. The method further includes forming a central composite layer over the inner monolithic layer by twisting continuous beta phase stoichiometric silicon carbide fibers into tows, transporting the tows to a braiding machine, and forming a reinforcing thread framework. A pyrocarbon interface coating is built up by chemical methane vapor deposition in a sealed tubular hot-wall CVD reactor. Then, a matrix is formed by chemical methylsilane vapor deposition in the reactor. A protective outer monolithic layer is formed from crystals of beta phase stoichiometric silicon carbide over the central composite layer by chemical methylsilane vapor deposition in a CVD reactor. And then the carbon substrate is removed from the fabricated semi-finished product.

A high performance fiber (HPF) structure, including a plurality of fibers arranged in the structure; a matrix disposed between the fibers; wherein a multilayer coating is provided along the surfaces of at least some of the fibers with an inner layer region having a sheet-like strength; and an outer layer region, having a particle-like strength, such that any cracks propagating toward the outer layer from the matrix propagate along the outer layer and back into the matrix, thereby preventing the cracks from approaching the fibers. A method of forming an interphase in a ceramic matrix composite material having a plurality of SiC fibers, which maximizes toughness by minimizing fiber to fiber bridging, including arranging a plurality of SiC fibers into a preform; selectively removing (e.g., etching) silicon out of the surface of the fibers resulting in a porous carbon layer on the fibers; and replacing the porous carbon layer with an interphase layer (e.g., Boron Nitride), which coats the fibers to thereby minimize fiber to fiber bridging in the preform.
