A fastener is arranged within the nose and is coaxially slidable within the nose and movable by the punch. An ultrasonic vibration is focused through the die anvil to a zone on a material assembly arranged thereon for heating the zone. The punch is configured to drive the fastener outwardly from the nose and into the material assembly at the zone.

A method can be used for joining workpieces using a fastener. The fastener includes a first head and a shank extending from the first head along a fastener axis. The joining method includes the following steps: (a) rotating a fastener about a fastener axis; (b) moving the fastener toward the first and second workpieces while the fastener rotates about the fastener axis such that the fastener increases the temperature in the first and second workpieces in order to soften and pierce the first and second workpieces along the fastener axis; and (c) advancing the fastener through the first and second workpieces and toward an open cavity of a die after piercing the first and second workpieces while the fastener rotates about the fastener axis such that the shank is partially disposed inside the open cavity in order to form a second head.

Threads are formed in situ throughout a bore of a sleeve inserted into a corresponding hole a substrate. A sleeve having a bore is inserted into a corresponding hole of a substrate. A mandrel is rotated through the sleeve. The mandrel has a threaded ended; the threaded end rotating throughout the bore of the sleeve forms threads throughout the bore. Prior to inserting the sleeve into the corresponding hole of the substrate, the sleeve can be placed onto the mandrel. In this case, the mandrel has an increasing diameter at the threaded end thereof, such that the sleeve rests on the mandrel towards the threaded end thereof where the bore has a smaller diameter than the mandrel. The mandrel is then rotated out of the sleeve in a direction opposite the direction in which the sleeve has been inserted into the corresponding hole of the substrate.

A novel method of manufacturing a component member of a VGS turbocharger is provided, which method enables, when manufacture of the component member is performed mainly by press working using a die, the press working to be efficiently performed because of various engineering improvements applied thereto in accordance with working techniques and a formed shape. The invention is characterized in that: to form receiving holes (25) for rotatably holding adjustable blades in a turbine frame as an example of the component member, preparatory holes (25a) having a diameter equal to or smaller than that of the receiving holes (25) in a finished state are formed and then the receiving holes (25) are finished by pressing a steel ball (B) having a diameter approximately equal to that of the receiving holes (25) in the finished state into each of the preparatory holes (25a) to provide a desired accuracy in hole diameter and a desired surface roughness of inner surfaces thereof; and the steel ball (B) is integrally formed on an distal end of a punch portion (PU).

A controller of the machine has a linear encoder for detecting the axial position of the piston shaft, an electric hydraulic servo valve provided in a hydraulic circuit between the hydraulic power source and the hydraulic cylinder, a machining data input unit for inputting machining data of the work rivet into a programmable control unit. The control unit receives the output of the linear encoder and the input machining data and controlling the hydraulic cylinder via the electric/hydraulic servo valve based on the machining data and the output of the encoder.

Riveting apparatus comprises a body for attachment to a pressing head, a rotary member journalled in the body and means for driving the rotary member during a pressing operation, a shaft journalled in the rotary member for rotation about an axis eccentric thereto and a pinion fixed to the shaft, an internally toothed gear fixed to said body and meshing with the pinion, the gear ratio between the two being such that points on the pinion describe hypocycloids intersecting the axis of the rotary member, a central peg on the pinion, a tool-holder mounted for universal movement on the body and oscillatable relatively to the axis thereof by means of said peg, and a rivet-set detachably mounted in the holder. A cylindrical body 2 is clamped to the head 1 of a press which has a rotary driving shaft 9 with a rectangular driving dog 8 at its lower end. A sleeve 6 is journalled in the body and has an eccentric bore through which passes a shaft 10. The dog 8 engages a slot in the end of the sleeve. To the lower end of the shaft 10 is secured a pinion 11 which meshes with an internally toothed ring 13 which is locked to the body 2. The ratio between the pinion and ring is 41 : 50. A peg 17 projects from the face of the pinion and is eccentric to the axis of the pinion. At the free end of the peg is a ball 18 which forms a universal joint with a shell 20 secured in a tool-holder 19. A compression spring 22 maintains the toolholder in contact with a pressure ring 14, both the tool-holder and the pressure ring having spherical faces.
