A switchable differential drive, preferably for a vehicle driven by an electric motor, has a differential drive housing, a drivable differential carrier rotatably supported in the housing, two axle shaft gears supported therein, which are connected to output shafts extending out of the differential carrier and which are connected to one another via differential gears. A first output shaft is designed directly as an axle shaft and a second output shaft is coaxially supported in the first axle shaft. Two switching couplings are arranged coaxially relative to the latter axle shaft. To obtain a first gear stage, the first switching coupling is engaged, thereby non-rotatingly connecting the output shaft to the axle shaft, while the second switching coupling is open. To obtain a second gear stage with one wheel drive, the second switching coupling is engaged, thereby non-rotatingly connecting the output shaft to the differential drive housing while the other switching coupling is open.

The control valve (80) includes a bimetallic valve element (82) that compensates for temperature changes and may also include a speed sensitive valve closure (104) for providing immediate coupling without delay above certain speeds of operation. Mounting of the bimetallic valve element (82) of control valve (80) within a recess (98) provides accurate control of the temperature compensation.

A drive wheel torque control system for a vehicle includes control means for controlling a variable differential motion limiting device provided between drive wheels to distribute a predetermined LSD torque from a racing drive wheel to a nonracing drive wheel. The control means includes vehicle speed determining means for determining a vehicle speed from a follower wheel spaced, drive wheel speed determining means adapted to select a smaller one of the drive wheel speeds as a drive wheel speed, when the inner-side wheel in turning movement is racing, and to select a larger one of the drive wheel speeds, when the outer-side wheel in turning movement is racing, and torque determining means for determining the LSD torque from the vehicle speed and the drive wheel speed. This ensures that only when the inner wheel is racing, the smaller one of the drive wheel speeds can be selected, and an LSD torque can be distributed to the outer wheel, thereby easily effecting the adjustment of the locus of turning movement of the vehicle when the inner wheel is racing, while properly controlling the behavior of the vehicle.

When the vehicle speed increases, the controller increases a rate of increase of the clutch engagement force with respect to the lateral acceleration to improve both of a high speed cornering stability and a low speed steering response.
