Shift control system and method are provided for use in a vehicle automatic transmission in which a desired speed range is achieved in accordance with the state of driving of a vehicle. The degree of meandering of a running road on which the vehicle is running is detected. The downhill grade of the running road is also detected. Based on the detection results, it is determined whether or not the running road is a meandering downhill road. When it is determined that the vehicle is running on the meandering downhill road, it is then determined whether or not a downshift is needed. When the downshift has been determined to be necessary, the speed range of the vehicle automatic transmission is shifted from a current speed range to a speed range lower than the current speed range.

This invention relates to a shift control system and method for a vehicle automatic transmission, in which control of a downshift on a downhill road is performed by fuzzy inference. When a vehicle has been determined to be running on a downhill road by a driving state determining device, a speed range setting device sets as an optimal speed range a speed range lower than a current speed range. In the automatic transmission, the state of engagement of a desired engaging element is changed over to achieve the optimal speed range. When the vehicle has been determined to be running on the downhill road by the driving state determining device so that the speed range lower than the current speed range has been set as the optimal speed range and also when no change has been determined in engine load by an engine load detecting device, an engagement state control device reduces engaging force to be produced upon changing over the state of engagement of a desired engaging element for achieving the optimal speed range. This makes it possible to eliminate a sense of incogruity, which would otherwise occur upon shifting to a higher speed range, while assuring a good shifting response.

In a continuously variable transmission which is provided with a primary pulley and a secondary pulley, between which a driving belt is mounted, primary and secondary control systems, which are coupled to the respective pressure chambers of the axially translatable pulley discs, are employed to precipitate current pressure values, in dependence upon desired pressure values. To this end, the control system employs a regulator to which only the difference between the desired and the measured pressure-value is supplied, whereby the regulator nevertheless only has to regulate the relatively rapidly changing variation in a rest value supplied separately by a rest state device. This greatly improves the dynamic behaviour of the controller, so that rapid variations in the desired value of the entrant pressure can be effectively followed by the control system.

Preferably, a plurality of control modes including the first control mode are provided, one of the control modes is selected by the fuzzy inference in accordance with at least the degree of winding and gradient of a road on which the vehicle is traveling, and a gearshift position to be set is selected in accordance with the selected control mode.

Then a second fuzzy reasoning is carried out based on second fuzzy production rules using a deviation between the target speed ratio and the current speed ratio and the change of the deviation as parameters to determine a control value such that the lock-up clutch is controlled between a position at which the clutch is fully engaged and a position at which the clutch is fully not engaged including an intermediate position at which the clutch is partially engaged. With this system, the lock-up control can cope with various vehicle operating conditions so that the vehicle drivability and fuel consumption is improved while suppressing engine noise. This system further enables control that is better matched to the intention, decision-making, and feelings of a human driver.
