The present invention relates to a process for producing coated bismuth vanadate yellow pigments comprising the following steps: (a) subjecting a reaction mixture comprising a suspension in nitric acid of bismuthyl nitrate and vanadium (V) oxide, or a suspension in nitric acid of bismuth (III) oxide and vanadium (V) oxide, to stirring to form bismuth vanadate particles; (b) terminating the stirring and holding the reaction mixture for a period of time; (c) filtering off the bismuth vanadate particles; (d) washing the bismuth vanadate particles; (e) dispersing the washed bismuth vanadate particles in a hot, phosphate-containing, aqueous solution to activate the surface of the particles; (f) filtering off the activated bismuth vanadate particles; (g) washing the activated bismuth vanadate particles; (h) dispersing the activated bismuth vanadate particles in water to form a suspension; (i) precipitating at least one material selected from the group consisting of hydrated aluminum phosphate, aluminum/zinc phosphate or silicon oxide onto the external surface of the activated bismuth vanadate particles in the suspension to form said coating; (j) filtering off the coated bismuth particles; (k) washing and drying the coated bismuth vanadate particles.

The dispersion contains the pigment particles in an amount of 20-55% by weight, and also includes a carrier that is compatible with the vehicle of the intended coating composition. The dispersions are stable and provide essentially complete separation of the lamellar pigment particles.

A process for preparing a structured composite pigmentary material comprises forming a dispersion of uncoated particles of titanium dioxide at a pH value at which the particles have a surface charge and subjecting the dispersion to cross-flow filtration until the dispersion contains more than 50% by weight titanium dioxide. The concentrated dispersion is mixed with a dispersion of chemically distinct particles having a surface charge of opposite sign under conditions which ensure that the sign of the surface charge on either of the particulate materials is not reversed. In the resultant composite pigmentary material the titanium dioxide particles are held in association with the chemically distinct particles as a result of said surface charges. The structured composite can be used to produce paints having higher opacity than conventional paints containing an equivalent amount of titanium dioxide and the durability of these paints is better than a conventional paint containing a similar amount of uncoated titanium dioxide.

A method for making a moisture-resistant aluminum nitride-containing powder which includes (a) coating a layer of silicate onto aluminum nitride-containing powder having aluminum nitride on at least a portion of its surface and (b) heat-treating the coated aluminum nitride-containing powder at a temperature of from 350.degree. to 1000.degree. C. for a period of time sufficient to cause the silicate to react with the surface aluminum nitride thereby forming a layer of Si--Al--O--N bonded to the surface aluminum nitride. The silicate has alkyl or alkoxyalkyl radicals attached thereto. The method yields a moisture-resistant aluminum nitride-containing powder having a layer of Si--Al--O--N reaction-bonded to the surface aluminum nitride.

Radiation-absorptive materials, suitable for fabrication into packages, sheets, inks, paints, decorative surface treatments, lotions, creams, and gels are disclosed. The materials exploit certain optical properties associated with uniform, spherical, nanosize particles to provide complete radiation absorption, over a selected bandwidth, at low concentration. One type of particle exhibits an "absorption edge" at a chosen wavelength, transmitting radiation whose wavelength exceeds the characteristic bandgap wavelength, while effectively absorbing all radiation with wavelengths smaller than that minimum. Another type of particle exhibits "optical resonance," which causes radiation of a characteristic wavelength to interact with the particles so as to produce self-reinforcing internal reflections that strongly enhance the amplitude of the radiation trapped within the particle.
