    摘要: Embodiments of systems and methods are provided for a tunable laser device. The tunable laser device may include a diffraction grating connected to a pivot arm that pivots the diffraction grating about a pivot point to tune the laser device. In pivoting the diffraction grating about the pivot point, both the wavelength to which the diffraction grating is tuned and the length of the optical cavity may be changed. The length of the pivot arm may be selected to reduce the number of mode hops of the tunable laser device when tuning the laser device over its tuning range.

    摘要: A laser is provided, suitable for use in laser displays, having a laser cavity defined by at least first and second mirrors, a lasing material positioned in an optical path within the cavity with an associated pumping source and wherein one of the mirrors has a reflective surface that is moveable so as to alter the length of the cavity at a rate sufficiently high to ensure that effects due to a speckle pattern, as perceived by an observer or detector of light generated by the laser, are reduced while preserving the instantaneous coherence of the laser light. Sufficiently rapid movement of the mirror surface ensures that any speckle pattern changes at a faster rate than can be detected by the human eye or by a detector so that speckle is no longer visible, or is at least considerably reduced.

    摘要: A wavelength tunable laser unit has a laser mode selection, and is adapted to provide a laser signal in accordance with one or more laser control parameters. For operating the laser unit, the laser signal is swept in a wavelength range, a laser operation signal indicative of the laser unit's operation during the sweep is received, and the laser operation signal is analyzed for detecting an indication of a mode hop occurred in the generated laser signals during the sweep. At least one correction value is determined based on the detected mode hop indication, and at least one of the one or more laser control parameters, applicable for a next wavelength sweep, is modified based on the determined at least one correction value.

    摘要: The specification describes an optical filter wherein long period gratings (LPGs) are used in a new configuration to provide in-line bandpass filtering of optical signals. In the basic embodiment, two dissimilar LPGs are installed in the optical fiber transmission line. The first LPG converts light, over a broad wavelength range, being transmitted in the fundamental, or LP01, mode of the optical fiber transmission line into light in a higher order mode (HOM) of the optical fiber. The mode-converted signal, with mode LPm,n, is then coupled to a second waveguide, the second waveguide having transmission characteristics different from those of the first. The second waveguide supports propagation of light in a LPm,n mode. The mode-converted signal is then transmitted through a second LPG where the signal over a selected narrow band of wavelengths that is accepted by the second LPG is converted back to a LP01 mode. The selected narrow band in the LP01 mode propagates efficiently over the remainder of the optical fiber transmission path.

    摘要: A diode pumped laser wherein third harmonic generation at 355 nm is obtained from an intra-cavity-tripled diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 crystal utilizing an angle-tuned LBO doubler and tripler, and operated at high repetition rates and good overall efficiency. An average UV power of over 2 watts at 30 kHz and 1 watt at 100 kHz is typically obtained with a 20 watt diode array "bar" side-pumping a one percent (1%) Nd:YVO4 (vanadate) slab. The device utilizes room temperature intra-cavity doubling and takes advantage of a small beam waist at the doubler and tripler required with low-power CW diode pumping.

    摘要: A harmonically and regeneratively mode-locked laser pulse oscillator having a clock extraction circuit for picking up from a fragment of a laser output a clock signal corresponding to a high-order integer multiple of the fundamental frequency determined by the cavity length of the laser, a phase shifter and an electric amplifier for driving an optical modulator disposed in the laser cavity at the frequency of the clock signal. The laser pulse oscillator has a phase-locked loop including a phase comparator for detecting the phase difference between the clock signal and an external signal fed from a synthesizer with its frequency fixed, a fiber stretcher for controlling the cavity length such that the repetition rate frequency of the laser pulse oscillator is locked to the external signal, and an electric filter and electric amplifier for expanding and contracting the fiber length by feeding back the phase difference detected by the phase comparator to the fiber stretcher. This makes it possible to lock the repetition rate frequency of the optical pulse train to the external signal, and to generate the stabilized, fixed frequency optical pulse train with a high repetition rate over a long time period.
