The apparatus for transmitting broadcast signals, the apparatus comprises an encoder to encode service data corresponding to a number of physical paths, a time interleaver to time interleave the encoded service data in each physical path, a frame builder to build at least one signal frame including the time interleaved service data, a modulator to modulate data in the built at least one signal frame by an OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) scheme and a transmitter to transmitting the broadcast signals having the modulated data.

An apparatus for transmitting broadcast signals includes an encoder to encode service data, a framing block to map the encoded service data into data symbols to build at least one signal frame, a frequency interleaver to frequency interleaving data in the at least one signal frame by using an interleaving sequence, a modulator to perform a modulation on the frequency interleaved data by the OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) scheme and a transmitter to transmit the broadcast signals having the modulated data. A different interleaving sequence is used for two consecutive data symbols corresponding to an OFDM symbol pair or a data symbol corresponding to an OFDM symbol according to an FFT size of the modulation.

A broadcast signal transmitter according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises an input formatting module configured to perform baseband formatting and to output at least one PLP (Physical Layer Pipe) data; a BICM (Bit Interleaved Coded Modulation) module configured to perform an error correction process on the PLP data; a framing and interleaving module configured to interleave the PLP data and to generate a signal frame; and a waveform generating module configured to generate a broadcast signal by inserting a preamble into the signal frame and performing OFDM modulation.

The method includes encoding service data, mapping the encoded service data, wherein at least one Forward Error Correction (FEC) block of the mapped service data is grouped into at least one interleaving frame, and time interleaving the mapped service data based on the at least one interleaving frame. The time interleaving further includes block interleaving the mapped service data by writing cells of the mapped service data in a memory and reading the cells in the memory, wherein virtual cells belonging to virtual FEC blocks are skipped during the reading; spreading out the block interleaved service data over at least one signal frame; building a signal frame including the time interleaved service data; modulating data in the built signal frame by an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM) scheme; and transmitting the broadcast signals.

The present invention provides a method for transmitting a broadcast signal. The method for transmitting a broadcast signal according to the present invention may comprise the steps of: encoding data pipe (DP) data corresponding to each of a plurality of DPs which transmit at least one service or service component; generating at least one signal frame by mapping the encoded DP data to data symbols; modulating data present in the at least one signal frame by means of an OFDM scheme; and transmitting a broadcast signal including the modulated data.
