The invention provides a process for minimizing the emission of particulate matter and precursors thereof from a flue gas stream of an engine comprising particulate matter and precursors thereof and at least one gaseous component. The process includes the steps of obtaining a flue gas stream of an engine comprising particulate matter and precursors thereof; increasing the moisture content of the stream by contacting it with a first aqueous medium in an amount and at a temperature at which at least 50% of the water content of the first aqueous medium is evaporated; whereby a moisture laden gas stream, optionally containing suspension droplets, is formed; cooling the moisture laden gas stream whereby suspension droplets are formed; and applying a centrifugal force to the moisture laden gas stream and to the suspension droplets to effect the swirling thereof, whereby a treated gaseous stream and an aqueous stream are formed.

A low emissions 2-stroke natural gas fueled engine includes at least one cylinder with an exhaust port in communication with a silencer/catalytic converter unit. The unit has first and second volumes in communication with each other. The first volume dampens spurious exhaust pressure excursions and removes particulates in the exhaust. The second volume houses an oxidation catalyst for treating exhaust to reduce exhaust emissions. The engine oil has at most 10 ppm zinc content to reduce metal poisons contained in the exhaust prior to contact with the oxidation catalyst. The engine oil preferably has a very low ash content to minimize sulfur combustion components in the exhaust to reduce masking of the oxidation catalyst. The first volume preferably has a pressure relief valve set to relieve at a pressure greater than the maximum normal operating pressure of the engine to avoid excessive pressure excursions of the engine exhaust from damaging the oxidation catalyst.

The invention relates to propulsion engineering in particular to improvement of thermodynamic cycle, as operation mode of internal combustion engine. An aggregate-phase thermodynamic cycle consists in a consecutive and interrelated changing of thermodynamic parameters of an exhaust gas, as a working medium of an internal combustion engine, resulted from energetic separation in a swirl chamber, incorporated with an engine into a single thermodynamic system with formation of a single closed volume. Here the consecutive impacts of considerable high and low temperatures bring about aggregate-phase changes of a working medium. At the top temperature limit there is a possibility of ionizing of all exhaust gases, in one option; partial ionization in another option. At the bottom temperature limit there is a possibility of condensation of all exhaust gases in a closed volume in one option, or a part of them in another option. Which consecutively leads to creation of a stable and considerable vacuum in this closed volume. This causes new attributes for the completion of a positive working stroke by an engine expansion machine, as a vacuum engine. For the achievement of the specified technical effect, with the reference to the known from the level of engineering of an internal combustion engine design, containing the machine of volumetric expansion communicating with the swirl chamber of energetic separation, it is preferable, according to the invention, to execute the engine design so that the machine of volumetric expansion of the engine and swirl chamber of energetic separation form a single closed volume with a common interdependent thermodynamic parameters with the opportunity of a vacuum creation on this volume. A silencer for silencing exhaust gases includes an acoustic resonator chamber that serves as a spark arrester to trap burning carbon particles and prevent them passing to the atmosphere. The silencer has an exhaust gas inlet and an exhaust gas outlet. Exhaust gases pass from the inlet to the outlet through a first passage and into a first chamber. The first chamber communicates with an acoustic resonator chamber by means of a connecting passage. The connecting passage is positioned adjacent the first passage so that sparks in the exhaust enter the acoustic resonator chamber where they are trapped. The silencer thus avoids the need for a separate spark arrester, as required by prior art silencers.
