Abstract: A system for removing effluents from the exhaust gases of an engine includes an auxiliary occupational emissions device positioned downstream of a vehicle-regulated emission abatement system. One or more glow plugs is positioned between the vehicle-regulated emission abatement system and the auxiliary occupational emissions device. The glow plugs are operable to heat exhaust gases exiting the vehicle-regulated emission abatement system prior to advancement into the auxiliary occupational emissions device. A method of lighting off an auxiliary occupational emissions device is also disclosed.

Abstract: Burning of hydrocarbon fuels in a combustion engine creates pollutants that include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and various hydrocarbons. Catalytic converter which is designed to reduce such pollutants relies on precious metal catalysts like platinum. There is an ongoing need to find more effective methods of pollution control as well as cheaper alternatives to precious metals. The solution proposed in this disclosure takes advantage of electrical characteristics of exhaust gases. Some of the pollutants in the exhaust gas exhibit positive electron affinity. Such pollutants are converted to negative ions by providing extra electrons. Many of the pollutants have charge distributions which facilitate electrical interactions with the ions. They are attracted to the ions to form clusters. Pollutant clusters formed as such are separated from the rest of the exhaust gas by electric and/or magnetic forces.

Abstract: An exhaust treatment apparatus (ATA) for reducing one or more components of the airstream directed through the ATA. The ATA includes an airstream inlet, an airstream outlet, and an airstream path directed through the ATA from the airstream inlet to the airstream outlet, and at least one corona/NTP generating region for altering a composition of an airstream. The ATA includes an outer enclosure forming one electrode surface and a second electrode surface positioned within and electrically insulated from the outer enclosure electrode surface, where an area between the outer enclosure electrode surface and the second electrode surface forms at least a part of the airstream path directed through the ATA. The second electrode surface includes a series of ridges directed towards the outer enclosure that encourage corona generation. A method is provided for using the ATA for treating an airstream, including an exhaust airstream from a combustion engine, as well as an exhaust airstream from a compression-ignition (diesel) engine.

Abstract: An exhaust system includes an electrically conductive shell defining an exhaust pathway. The shell includes a tapered portion that tapers inward toward a longitudinal axis of the shell to define a narrowing region of the exhaust pathway. The exhaust system further includes an ionization assembly and an electrical subsystem that applies an electrical potential difference between the shell and at least a portion of the ionization assembly located within the exhaust pathway. The ionization assembly includes a support arm located within the exhaust pathway that extends into the narrowing region of the exhaust pathway. The ionization assembly further includes a plurality of electrically conductive discs mounted on and supported by the support arm. The ionization assembly is electrically insulated from the shell by an electrically insulating support structure.

Abstract: An apparatus for reducing toxic gases from exhaust of a vehicle comprises a shell disposed in line with an exhaust path of a vehicle and an electrode that passes through the shell. A substrate coated with an oxidizer is disposed within the shell downstream from the first screen. Further, a second screen is disposed within the shell downstream from the substrate such that the substrate is disposed between the first screen and the second screen.
