Abstract: A catalytic muffler for an internal combustion engine of a portable working tool, e.g. a chain saw or a trimmer, having a housing designed to be directly attached to an exhaust port of an engine. The housing further includes a front chamber and a rear chamber divided from each other by an intermediate baffle. The housing further having an inner housing having a first open end constituting the exhaust gas inlet located in the rear chamber. The inner housing includes a catalyst body through which essentially all exhaust gas flows when in use. A second open end of the inner housing is arranged in one of said front and rear chambers and the exhaust gas outlet of the muffler is arranged in the other chamber such that treated gas in use flows through at least one aperture in the intermediate baffle from one chamber to the other.

Abstract: A water-cooled internal combustion engine E is provided with a cylinder block water jacket Jb, a cylinder head water jacket Jh, and an exhaust manifold passage 38 in which exhaust gas discharged from combustion chambers 26 through exhaust ports 28 collects. The exhaust manifold passage 38 is formed only in a cylinder head 21. The exhaust gas that has collected in the exhaust manifold passage 38 is discharged through an exhaust outlet of the exhaust manifold passage 38 from a cylinder head 21 into an exhaust passage 39 formed in a cylinder block C. The exhaust manifold passage 38 is surrounded by the cylinder head water jacket Jh, the cylinder block water jacket Jb and a discharge water jacket 80 for carrying cooling water from the cylinder head water jacket Jh and the cylinder block water jacket Jb to the outside of the engine body. The engine E provided with the exhaust manifold passage 38 does not require any assembling work for sealing the exhaust manifold passage 38 and hence the cost of the combustion engine E can be reduced. A wall defining the exhaust manifold passage 38 can be efficiently cooled by the cooling water that flows through the water jackets.

Abstract: A small jet propulsion watercraft 10 is provided with side wall portions 14a and 14b formed on both the left and right sides of a stepping platform 13, within which water lock devices 36 and 37 are disposed, respectively. The water lock devices 36 and 37 are connected with connecting pipes 38a and 38b located below the stepping platform 13. An exhaust pipe 40 is connected to the front end of the water lock device 37, with the exhaust pipe 40 initially extending forward, extending upward and then rearward, and passing above the water lock device 37 within the side wall portion 14b, and with its end further extending downward to a position below the stepping platform 13. Abstract: A start-up strategy for engine feedback control that utilizes a combustion condition sensor associated with only one cylinder. On starting and warm-up, only that one cylinder is feedback-controlled at all times. Under these conditions, the amount of corrected fuel supplied to the feedback cylinder is added to a fixed incremental amount of fuel that will be supplied to the remaining cylinders. This promotes smooth warm-up without backfiring or stalling and a quicker transition to all cylinder feedback control.

Abstract: The known muffler of an industrial engine, in which a channel communicating with an exhaust gas outlet is integrally formed on the inside of a muffler main body made of an aluminum diecast, and an inner lid is mounted to the open side of the channel to form an exhaust gas passageway serving also as a tail pipe, within the muffler main body as disclosed in Japanese Utility Model Application No. 63-127369 (1988) is improved. The improvements reside in that a cross-section area of the channel is reduced gradually or in a stepwise manner from its inlet towards the exhaust gas outlet so as to prevent carbon from adhering to the exhaust passageway, and in that at the exhaust gas outlet is formed a projecting wall adapted to butt against the inner lid, integrally with the muffler main body so as to prevent the exhaust gas escape without passing through the exhaust gas passageway.
