    摘要: A high-impact, energy-absorbing vehicle barrier system generally includes a substantially rigid outer containment wall coupled via strap assemblies with an energy-absorbing inner impact wall, and energy-absorbing cartridges strategically positioned between the impact wall and containment wall. The impact wall is constructed of a number of tubes coupled with one another to present a substantially smooth, uniform surface to passing vehicles. The energy-absorbing cartridges generally consist of a foam member or a number of foam sheets which compress and crush between the containment wall and impact wall to absorb energy from an errant vehicle striking the face of the impact wall, while the deflection and deformation of the impact wall tubes dissipates additional energy to reduce peak decelerations and mitigate the severity of high-energy vehicular impacts. Internal splice units and the strap assemblies provide for relatively easy and quick replacement of damaged impact wall sections and energy-absorbing cartridges.

    摘要: A purified thermostable enzyme is derived from the archael bacterium Thermococcus GU5L5. The enzyme has a molecular weight of about 68.5 kilodaltons and has cellulase activity. The enzyme can be produced from native or recombinant host cells and can be used for the removal of arginine, phenylalanine, or methionine amino acids from the N-terminal end of peptides in peptide or peptidomimetic synthesis. The enzyme is selective for the L, or `natural` enantiomer of the amino acid derivatives and is therefore useful for the production of optically active compounds. These reactions can be performed in the presence of the chemically more reactive ester functionality, a step which is very difficult to achieve with nonenzymatic methods.

    摘要: A laser machining (including marking) method that employs a diode laser pumped solid state laser is controlled by a computer that contains a program for the interaction of the laser beam with a workpiece. The pumping of the laser is synchronised with the action of the beam in a series of active machining periods alternating with inactive non-machining periods. In order to avoid overheating of the active element, the duty cycle of these periods is maintained below a chosen value and no active period is allowed to exceed a selected percentage of the thermal time constant of the active element.
