Abstract: The present disclosure provides a device for ultrasonic sensing, which includes a driver circuit configured to generate an ultrasonic signal, a piezoelectric element having a first electrode and a second electrode, a blocking transistor configured to connect the piezoelectric element with the second electrode to a fixed bias voltage, and a source rectifier including a gate, a drain, and a source electrically connected to the piezoelectric element and the blocking transistor. The piezoelectric element is coupled with the driver circuit with the first electrode. The blocking transistor includes a gate for receiving a blocking control signal, a drain electrically connected to the second electrode of the piezoelectric element, and a source electrically connected to the fixed bias voltage, wherein, in response to the blocking signal, the blocking transistor is configured to be turned on within a transmission period and to be turned off within a receiving period.

Abstract: An ultrasonic touch sensor includes a touch structure configured to receive a touch; a transmitter arrangement configured to transmit one or more ultrasonic transmit waves toward the touch structure; a receiver arrangement configured to receive ultrasonic reflected waves produced by reflections of the one or more ultrasonic transmit waves and generate a plurality of measurement signals representative of the ultrasonic reflected waves; and a measurement circuit configured to measure a degree of variation of a plurality of measurement signals, compare the degree of variation with a detection threshold, and determine whether a no-touch event or a touch event has occurred at the touch structure based on whether the degree of variation satisfies the detection threshold.

Abstract: A multi-virtual button finger-touch input system includes a cover layer, force-measuring and touch-sensing integrated circuits (FMTSICs), each coupled to the inner surface of the cover layer corresponding to one of the virtual buttons, an elongate flexible circuit, and a host controller. The FMTSICs are mounted to the elongate flexible circuit. The host controller is in communication with each of the FMTSICs via digital bus wiring. The host controller is configured to: (1) obtain force-localization features and ultrasound-localization features of the FMTSICs and (2) determine whether an event is a finger-touch event or a false-trigger event and if the event is determined to be finger-touch event, identify one of the virtual buttons as a touched virtual button, using at least in part a model that has the force-localization features and the ultrasound-localization features as inputs. The force-localization features and ultrasound-localization features are derived from the PMFE digital data and the PMUT digital data respectively.

Abstract: Acoustic touch and/or force sensing system architectures and methods for acoustic touch and/or force sensing can be used to detect a position of an object touching a surface and an amount of force applied to the surface by the object. The position and/or an applied force can be determined using time-of-flight (TOF) techniques, for example. Acoustic touch sensing can utilize transducers (e.g., piezoelectric) to simultaneously transmit ultrasonic waves along a surface and through a thickness of a deformable material. The location of the object and the applied force can be determined based on the amount of time elapsing between the transmission of the waves and receipt of the reflected waves. In some examples, an acoustic touch sensing system can be insensitive to water contact on the device surface, and thus acoustic touch sensing can be used for touch sensing in devices that may become wet or fully submerged in water.

Abstract: An ultrasonic fingerprint sensor may include sensor pixels with interleaved ultrasonically-sensitive regions. Each of a plurality of sensor pixels in the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor may include nine distinct ultrasonically-sensitive regions electrically coupled to a common readout circuit, where there is an ultrasonically-sensitive region of another sensor pixel disposed between each of the nine distinct ultrasonically-sensitive regions. The ultrasonic fingerprint sensor may further include circuitry for binning together groups of sensor pixels during certain lower-resolution operations such as touch sensor operations.
