Abstract:
The present invention includes scalable and cost-effective auxetic foam sensors (AFS) created through conformably coating a thin conductive nanomaterial-sensing layer on a porous substrate having a negative Poisson's ratio. In general, the auxetic foam sensors possess multimodal sensing capability, such as large deformation sensing, small pressure sensing, shear/torsion sensing and vibration sensing and excellent robustness in humidity environment.

A method for performing diagnostics on a target transformer includes applying a voltage output of a voltage generator to a winding or phase of the target transformer; controlling the voltage generator to output an AC voltage at a first frequency and then a second frequency and measuring first and second excitation currents flowing into the target transformer associated with the first frequency and second frequency, respectively. The method further includes determining an actual excitation current of the target transformer as a function of both the first and second excitation currents, and comparing the actual excitation current of the target transformer to excitation currents associated with one or more benchmark transformers having known electrical characteristics. And when the actual excitation current of the target transformer matches an excitation current of one of benchmark transformers, determining the electrical characteristics of the target transformer to match electrical characteristics of the one benchmark transformer.

A thermal poling method in which a poling treatment can be performed easily by a dry process. The poling treatment is performed on a PZT film by performing a heat treatment on the PZT film under a pressurized oxygen atmosphere at a temperature of 400° C. or more and 900° C. or less. The PZT film before the heat treatment has a single-domain crystal structure, and the PZT film after the heat treatment has a multi-domain crystal structure.

Embodiments of the invention provide for three-terminal pressure sensors (“3-TPS”), a method of measuring a pressure with a 3-TPS, and a method of manufacturing a 3-TPS. In some embodiments, the 3-TPS includes a semiconducting layer with cavity and a 3-TPS element having at least one piezoresistive layer overlapping at least a portion of the cavity and oriented at an angle selected to provide a desired sensitivity for the 3-TPS. The method of measuring a pressure with a 3-TPS is performed with a 3-TPS that includes an input terminal, first and second output terminals, and a 3-TPS element, the 3-TPS element overlapping at least a portion of a cavity at a predetermined angle. The method comprises providing an input signal to the input terminal of the 3-TPS, determining a difference between two output signals from the respective output terminals of the 3-TPS, and correlating the determined difference to a pressure.

A control valve monitoring system is disclosed. The control valve monitoring system includes at least one sensor connected to one of a valve stem or valve shaft, and the at least one sensor detects a change in mechanical integrity of one of the valve stem or valve shaft. A device for providing data regarding the change in mechanical integrity of one of the valve stem or valve shaft is provided, allowing maintenance of the valve shaft or valve stem to be conducted in an efficient manner.
Abstract:
A system and method for antenna analysis and electromagnetic compatibility testing in a wireless device utilizes a “parent” device that undergoes rigorous conventional testing. A “child” device having similar components may thereafter undergo abbreviated testing. Because the Total Isotropic Sensitivity of the parent device is known, testing may be performed on the child device to infer equivalence to the parent's TIS performance using the abbreviated test techniques.
Abstract:
A sensing device including a sensor, a triggering mechanism and a covering is provided. The covering is positioned in contact with a body such that the triggering mechanism extends from a moving segment to a reference segment and across a joint center located therebetween. Movement of the moving segment activates the triggering mechanism to provide a force input to the sensor, actuating the sensor to generate an output defining at least one measurement of the movement. The measurement may be one or more of rotation, translation, velocity, acceleration, and joint angle. An intermediate mechanism may be interposed between the triggering mechanism and the sensor. The sensing device may include a means to process or record measurements corresponding to movement of the moving segment and joint center. A system and method of measuring the movement of a moving segment is also provided.
