A laminar reinforcing structure is provided for impact resisting face on an article, such as toe-puffs of safety shoes, striking faces on baseball bat and ice hockey stick, outsoles for boots of ice skates, and heads or faces of golf clubs, to increase an impact-resistant strength at such faces. The reinforcing structure includes a basic layer and at least one reinforcing layer. The basic layer is made of one or more plies of a fiber-reinforced thermosetting resin material and molded into a profile matching with that of the impact-resisting face of the article. The reinforcing layer is made of a thermoplastic resin-fiber woven fabric dip-coated with thermosetting resin to cover at least part of surfaces of the basic layer or be sandwiched between any two adjacent plies of the basic layer. The laminar reinforcing structure provides excellent mechanical strength and has low weight without substantially increasing the article weight.

The process comprises adding a diisocyanate, specifically methylenediphenyldiisocyanate (MDI) to an aqueous slurry of calcium sulfate material and cellulosic fibers, where the MDI is added as an emulsion stable in the conditions in which the slurry is maintained. The process further includes passing the MDI containing slurry onto a flat porous forming surface to form a filter cake; removing a substantial portion of the water from the filter cake through the porous surface; pressing the filter cake to form a board and remove additional water; and drying the board to remove the remaining free water.

The method of making the absorbent material includes combining binder resin and absorbent polymer in a twin screw extrusion mechanism, compounding and driving the composition toward exit openings, extruding the composition through the exit openings, and preferably rapidly cooling the extrudate with non-liquid quenching means. The quenched or non-quenched extrudate may be made in the form of a pellet, film, or fibrous strand.

A method of manufacturing articles utilizing a composite material having a high density of small particles such as microspheres in a matrix material is disclosed. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, at least first and second layers of flanking material are disposed in a generally non-parallel relationship with respect to each other and then are pulled through a die. While the flanking material layers are being pulled through the die, a composite material is injected into a space defined between the at least first and second layers of flanking material. The composite material and the at least first and second layers of flanking material are heated as they pass through the die to cure the composite material and bond the at least two flanking material layers to the composite material, thereby forming a cured article.
