A method for producing a device substrate by obtaining a laminate comprising a carrier substrate, a first polyimide film comprising a first polyimide resin disposed on at least one surface of the carrier substrate, a second polyimide film disposed on the first polyimide film opposite to the surface of the first polyimide film formed on a surface of the carrier substrate; applying a physical stimulus to the second polyimide film without causing chemical changes in the first polyimide film such that the cross-sections of the second polyimide film are exposed and cross-sectional surfaces of the first polyimide film are not exposed and no physical stimulus is applied to the surface of the carrier substrate, wherein the adhesive strength of the first polyimide to the second polyimide film decreases when the second polyimide film in the laminate is cut to expose cross-sectional surfaces of the second polyimide film; and separating the second polyimide film from the first polyimide film formed on the carrier substrate to obtain the device.

Objects of the present invention are: to obtain a polyimide that is excellent in heat resistance, transparency, and optical isotropy and is soluble in an organic solvent; to provide, by using either a polyimide or a polyamic acid which is a precursor or the polyimide, a product or a member that is highly required to have heat resistance and transparency; and particularly to provide a product and a member both of which are obtained by applying a polyamic acid solution and a polyimide solution of the present invention to the surface of an inorganic substance such as glass, metal, metal oxide, or a single crystal silicon. These objects can be attained by a polyimide acid and a polyimide which are each prepared from an alicyclic tetracarboxylic dianhydride and a monomer having a fluorene structure.

The set of the ionogenic side-groups provide solubility of the organic compound or its salts and give rigidity to the rod-like macromolecule. The number n provides molecule anisotropy that promotes self-assembling of macromolecules in a solution of the organic compound or its salts, forming lyotropic liquid crystal. The solution is capable of forming a solid optical retardation layer of positive A-type substantially transparent to electromagnetic radiation in the visible spectral range. An optical film based on an organic compound of the general formula I and a method of making same are also disclosed.

An insulated glass sealant includes an elastomeric matrix that is the reaction product of a carboxyl-terminated polymer and a polycarbodiimide. A method of sealing an insulated glass unit includes applying the insulated glass sealant to one or more glass sheets, a spacer to be disposed between the glass sheets, or both; and contacting the one or more glass sheets with the spacer to define an annular space between the glass sheets and to produce the insulated glass unit. The sealants maintain the excellent attributes of traditional polyurethane sealants, such as low water swell, low moisture vapor transmission, good adhesion to the window frame, low migration of the insulating gas, and good workability, but without the use of polyisocyanates in the curing process. Methods for making the sealant and for sealing insulated glass panels, such as glass windows, with these rugged sealants, and the resulting articles, are also provided.
