Abstract: A composite structural panel for use in bridge structures, and method of manufacturing same, comprises a top panel and a bottom panel separated by and attached to at least one, but preferably a plurality, of structural composite preforms which may be fabricated by a continuous manufacturing process and may be saturated by resin using a continuous wetting process. The composite preforms may take any cross-sectional shape but are preferably trapezoidal. The top and bottom panels may be fabricated from a plurality of layers of woven fabric layers and non-woven fabric layers which are saturated with a resin that is subsequently cured using cure processes known in the art. The composite structural panel of the invention is usable as a flat structural member for use as bridge decking, ramps, trestles, and any application requiring a structural panel.

Abstract: The present invention provides a resin composition comprising maleimide-containing pre-polymerized resin and article made therefrom. The resin composition comprises: 100 weight parts of vinyl-containing polyphenylene ether resin; 35 to 45 weight parts of bis(vinylphenyl)ethane; and 30 to 60 weight parts of maleimide-containing pre-polymerized resin; wherein the maleimide-containing pre-polymerized resin is obtained by pre-polymerization of aromatic maleimide resin and long chain maleimide resin. The articles made from the resin composition improve at least one characteristic of glass transition temperature variation, copper foil peeling strength, percentage of thermal expansion, coefficient of thermal expansion and surface appearance.

Abstract: The invention pertains to a panel comprising a core layer and at least one surface layer bonded to the core layer, wherein the core layer comprises particulate material bonded with a resin and the surface layer comprises fibrous material bonded with a resin, the resins comprising a polymer derived from an aliphatic polyol with 2-15 carbon atoms and an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid with 3 to 15 carbon atoms, wherein the polymer has an extent of polymerization, determined gravimetrically, of at least 0.6, and wherein the ratio of the resin content (in wt. %) of the core layer to the total resin content (in wt. %) of the surface layer(s) is in the range of 1:1.5 to 1:15. The invention also pertains to a method of manufacturing the panel.

Abstract: Provided is a carpet comprising a textile top member, which includes carpet yarns and a nonwoven primary backing that is coupled with the carpet yarns so that the primary backing structurally supports the carpet yarns. The nonwoven primary backing includes reinforcement fibers deposed in the nonwoven primary backing. The reinforcement fibers are configured to mechanically reinforce and stabilize the carpet yarns. A secondary backing is coupled with the textile top member via a thermoplastic material. The carpet can be a carpet tile or a carpet rug.

Abstract: A composite panel is provided comprising first and third polymer plies having fibers therein that are substantially parallel to a first fiber axis and a second polymer ply having fibers therein that are substantially parallel to a second fiber axis. The first polymer ply comprises material with a first melting temperature, and the second and third polymer plies comprise material with a second melting temperature higher than the first melting temperature. Plies are bonded together to form a composite by heating the plies at a first heating temperature that is higher than the second melting temperature. First polymer ply material is provided at a first side of the composite. The first side of the composite is positioned adjacent to the core, and the composite and the core are heated at a second heating temperature that is higher than the first melting temperature but lower than the second melting temperature.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a shell includes providing a mold of the shell. The method also includes forming one or more first skins on the mold. Further, the method includes securing at least one three-dimensional (3-D) grid structure onto an inner surface of the one or more first skins. Abstract: An acoustic and thermal shield for a motor vehicle, including a porous shell based on fibers bound together by a binding agent and a spring layer based on elastically compressible polyurethane foam, the porosity of the shell being such that the foam is able to create a sealed skin on the underside of the shell, which fibers consist of two types: thick reinforcing fibers in an amount of 25 to 40% by weight of the shell and fine fibers in an amount of 15 to 35% by weight of the shell, the bonding agent being formed by fusible bonding fibers in an amount of 35 to 50% by weight of the shell, so that substantially no foam penetrates the thickness of the shell.
