Abstract: A switching power supply device includes: a rectifier circuit to which an AC input voltage is input; an input smoothing circuit smoothing a DC input voltage output from the rectifier circuit; a power converter circuit converting the DC input voltage and outputs an output voltage; an overvoltage detection circuit generating an input overvoltage detection signal which is activated when the DC input voltage is higher than a first reference voltage level; and a discharge circuit discharging stored charge stored in the input smoothing circuit. The power converter circuit includes a switching element. Switching of the switching element is stopped and discharging of the stored charge is started, with activation of the input overvoltage detection signal serving as a trigger, and when the input overvoltage detection signal is subsequently inactivated, the discharging is stopped and the switching of the switching element is resumed.

Abstract: An external power storage adapter (PSA) may supply electrical power to a portable information handling system or other power consuming device. The power storage adapter may include an AC-DC converter, a battery, and intelligent power management functionality. A PSA controller may determine whether electrical power supplied by the power storage adapter should be sourced from the AC-DC converter or from the battery based on various operating parameters of the power storage adapter, such the temperature of the power storage adapter, the state of charge of the battery, the amount of electrical power being supplied by the AC-DC converter, or the amount of time that the AC-DC converter has been supplying electrical power. The power storage adapter may output power to a port of the portable information handling system, such as a USB Type-C port, over a variable power bus.

Abstract: A method for communicating with a power converter comprises initiating a communication sequence by sensing a first distortion of a sensed waveform during a discharge period of a first power transfer cycle of the power converter. The sensed waveform is proportional to a secondary current of the power converter. At a primary side of the power converter, a data bit is received from a secondary side of the power converter, by sensing a second distortion to represent one state of the data bit and sending an absence of the second distortion to represent another state of the data bit. The secondary distortion is applied to the secondary current during the discharge period of a subsequent power transfer cycle.
