Abstract:
The subject invention provides materials and methods that effectively support innate immunity and/or disperse pathogenic biofilms using readily available, nontoxic, natural substances, while supporting restoration of normal microbiotic homeostasis. In one embodiment, the subject invention provides anti-biofilm compositions comprising one or more probiotic organisms, anti-microbial honey, and other ingredients such as prebiotic compounds, other hive products, green tea derivatives, other plant derivatives, and vitamin D3.

Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for distinguishing between and enumerating strains of lactic acid bacteria or Bifidobacteria present in a food product. This method implements various agar culture media and/or selective culture conditions, combined with various chromogenic substrates.

Abstract:
The involvement of intestinal microbiota in the initiation and perpetuation of inflammatory bowel disease is widely accepted. To reestablish the homeostasis of the gut the use of probiotics has been proposed, with however, limited clinical benefit. This invention relates to an assay based on the modulation of the immunological activity in DCs (dendritic cells) by probiotic strains, in particular L. paracasei and their use in protecting against inflammatory bowel and liver diseases.
Abstract:
An object of the present invention is to provide probes and primers for detecting beer-spoilage lactic acid bacteria with accuracy. The probes and primers for detecting beer-spoilage lactic acid bacteria according to the present invention each comprises a nucleotide sequence consisting of at least 15 nucleotides that hybridizes with the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1 or the complementary sequence thereof.

Abstract:
The invention provides a biosensor comprising a microbe-binding aptamer(s) in the substrate recognition element. It is possible to obtain a stabilized biosensor wherein the detection sensitivity for target microbe (target bacterium) is not impaired depending on the storage condition or measuring sample, and target bacterium in a body fluid can be directly measured by insertion of the substrate recognition element of the biosensor.
Abstract:
Lactobacillus screening methods were carried out using surface plasmon resonance spectrums and human intestinal mucin and blood group antigens as probes. A trial to set selection criteria in the above-mentioned methods of screening for lactobacilli was made to adapt the methods to mass screening, and it was discovered that lactobacilli compatible with ABO blood groups can be screened by setting 100 RU as a criterion for judging bacterial binding under certain conditions. Using 238 lactobacillus strains, the above-mentioned screening methods and tests to judge their compatibility for the use of yogurt production were carried out, to at long last specifically discover bacillus strains compatible with blood groups A, B, and O.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a prebiotic composition comprising a galacto oligosaccharide (GOS) produced from Lactobacillus plantarum, wherein the GOS acts as a selective growth medium for a chosen Lactobacillus plantarum probiotic bacterial strain, and wherein the GOS is substantially the same as the form produced by reverse β-galactosidase reaction in the chosen probiotic bacterial strain. The present invention also relates to methods of producing GOS and related composition incorporating the GOS.
Abstract:
A method is provided of selecting specific probiotic lactic acid bacteria producing histamine and the use of such strains for beneficial effects for mammals. The method includes selecting a lactic acid bacterial strain for use in the local production of histamine in a mammal, and further comprises screening bacteria for the presence of an active histidine operon and selecting a strain which has an active histidine operon and is capable of producing histamine. Preferably said strain is selected for its ability to produce histamine at a level of greater than 250 pg/ml. The present invention further provides products comprising the strains obtainable by the selection methods of the invention for use in the local production of histamine in a mammal, in particular for use in the treatment or prophylaxis of inflammatory conditions.
