Abstract: A sparkplug includes a sparkplug housing, a cathode including at least one electrode prong and being formed predominantly of iridium, and an anode formed at least predominantly of iron or steel. The material compositions of the cathode and anode provide for extended sparkplug service life, especially in high power density applications employing a prechamber sparkplug. Related methodology is also disclosed.

Abstract: An ignition device for an internal combustion engine includes: an ignition plug; a primary coil; a secondary coil magnetically linked to the primary coil and connected to the ignition plug; a main ignition circuit causing a spark discharge to occur in the ignition plug; an energy supply circuit that supplies and stops electrical energy to the predetermined winding of the primary coil to accordingly cause the spark discharge to continue; a recirculation circuit that permits and prohibits current recirculation through a recirculation path including the predetermined winding; and a controller configured to: control the main ignition circuit, and determine a start time of a permission of the current recirculation by the recirculation circuit using, as a trigger, the interruption signal which causes the main ignition circuit to interrupt the current through the primary coil, and end the permission after a predetermined time period has elapsed since the start time.

Abstract: In a general aspect, a circuit for controlling operation of an ignition circuit including an insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) device can include a current slope detection circuit configured to detect a slope of a current in a primary winding of an ignition coil included in the ignition circuit and a driver circuit coupled with the current slope detection circuit. The current slope detection circuit can be further configured to, during charging of the ignition coil, if the detected slope is above a first limit, provide a first indication to the driver circuit; and, if the detected slope is below a second limit, provide a second indication to the driver circuit. The driver circuit can be configured to, in response to receiving the first indication or the second indication, modify operation of the ignition circuit.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for inferring spark plug fouling due to accumulation of fuel additives thereon. In one example, an engine controller may infer spark plug hot fouling based on higher than expected exhaust temperatures by correlating the elevated exhaust temperature with late combustion phasing due to additive accumulation. A confidence factor of the spark plug hot fouling detection may be enhanced based on data regarding concurrent misfire and/or pre-ignition events.
