An ignition system is provided, in which a Zener diode is connected in parallel with a spark plug, to suppress torque variation from becoming large in an engine when deterioration of the spark plug is advanced. Specifically, the ignition system includes a secondary coil having an end connected to a center electrode of the spark plug via a connecting path. The connecting path is connected to a constant-voltage path having a grounded end and including the Zener diode. The time from when an ignition signal is switched off until when ignition timing occurs is measured for a plurality of times. The difference between a maximum value and a minimum value among the plurality of measurements is defined to be a variation range. A breakdown voltage of the Zener diode is adjusted based on requirements such as for rendering the variation range to be a predetermined time or smaller.

In a general aspect, a circuit for controlling operation of an ignition circuit including an insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) device can include a current slope detection circuit configured to detect a slope of a current in a primary winding of an ignition coil included in the ignition circuit and a driver circuit coupled with the current slope detection circuit. The current slope detection circuit can be further configured to, during charging of the ignition coil, if the detected slope is above a first limit, provide a first indication to the driver circuit; and, if the detected slope is below a second limit, provide a second indication to the driver circuit. The driver circuit can be configured to, in response to receiving the first indication or the second indication, modify operation of the ignition circuit.

A semiconductor device includes a power semiconductor element, a gate pull-down circuit which is connected to a gate terminal of the power semiconductor element, and a gate resistor which is connected between an input terminal of the semiconductor device and the gate terminal of the power semiconductor element. The gate pull-down circuit has a constant current circuit by which electric charges can be extracted from a gate capacitance of the power semiconductor element when a signal inputted to the input terminal has a low level. As a result, the semiconductor device has an improved switching speed and an improved noise resistance.

A coil failure detection circuit detects a rise of a collector current of an IGBT and a timer circuit measures the length of a rise period. If the rise is not a normal one, an electronic control unit judges that a coil failure has occurred. The electronic control unit turns off the IGBT to prevent misfires and stops a flow of fuel gas to a combustion chamber to prevent melting or deterioration of a catalyst.

A power switching control device for electric systems such as an ignition device for internal combustion engines has a control circuit IC and a switching IC. A temperature sensor is provided in the switching IC. The control circuit IC is joined to a grounding terminal through a conductive layer provided therebetween. Thus, the substrate potential of the control circuit IC is stabilized to the ground potential so that the temperature sensor is prohibited to operate erroneously due to electromagnetic noise.

An ignition device for an internal combustion engine includes a power transistor connected to a primary coil of an ignition coil, a current sensing resistor connected in series with the power transistor, a constant current circuit and an abnormal oscillation control circuit that connects the gate resistor with the feedback circuit when the constant current circuit controls the primary current to be constant. The constant current circuit has a gate resistor connected in series to the control gate of the power transistor and a feedback circuit connected between the gate resistor and the current sensing resistor and controls current supplied to a control gate of the power transistor so as to control the primary current to be constant.

The invention relates to an ignition system for a 14 V or 42 V on-board power system voltage which is connected to the ignition transformer directly via the semiconductor power output stage without an intermediate power unit. After an input signal from a superordinate engine control device, the semiconductor power output stage is switched on by an ignition control device. As a result, a current is built up at the primary side of the ignition transformer. After the predefined maximum current value is reached for the first time, the primary side of the ignition transformer is switched off for a predefined time period. In this time period, a maximum voltage for the spark breakdown is built up at the electrodes of the spark plug according to the principle of self induction. After the spark discharge, the primary side of the ignition transformer is timed and current-limited until the end of the ignition process which is predefined by the superordinate engine control device. The timed control operates with selected, predefined time intervals for switching the semiconductor power output stage alternately on and off. A current limitation is superimposed on the timed control and switches off the primary side of the ignition transformer whenever the primary current reaches a predefined maximum value.

A circuit arrangement of an ignition output stage, in particular for an ignition circuit of a motor vehicle, is described. The circuit arrangement includes a multiple Darlington transistor (Darlington) which drives a primary winding of an ignition coil, as well as a driving circuit for the Darlington. An n-p-n Darlington is provided, whose collector is connected to the positive terminal of a voltage source and whose emitter is connected to a first terminal of the primary winding of the ignition coil. The second terminal of the primary winding is connected to ground. The Darlington is driven via a decoupling element which isolates the driving circuit from a negative reverse voltage present at the base of the Darlington when the latter is turned off.

An automotive ignition control system includes a vehicle control computer operable to provide electronic spark timing (EST) signals, a control circuit having a number of coil drive circuits connected thereto, a corresponding number of coil driver devices connected to respective ones of the coil drive circuits and a corresponding number of ignition coils connected to respective ones of the coil driver devices. The control circuit is responsive to an active state of any one of the EST signals to activate a corresponding one of the coil driver devices while inhibiting activation of all others. If any EST signal remains in an active state for an excessive time period, the control circuit is operable to lock-out the corresponding coil driver device from operation until such a fault condition is cleared. The control circuit is preferably operable to accomplish the lock-out function by gradually decreasing the coil current associated with the faulty EST signal in a fashion that does not generate a spark event.

An igniter for an internal combustion engine includes a switching element performing flow and break control for a primary current flowing through an ignition coil depending upon a spark control signal output from an electronic engine control unit and a current limiting circuit limiting a current flowing through the switching element. The switching element is formed with an insulated gate bipolar transistor. The igniter further comprises a current detecting load element for detecting current flowing through the insulated gate bipolar transistor, and a diode being provided between the current detecting load element and the self-isolation N-MOS transistor, which diode having an opposite temperature coefficient to that of the current detecting load element. Also, in order to certainly provide a contact current of a connection terminal between the electronic engine control unit and the igniter and to assure detecting of circuit breakage between the electronic engine control unit and the igniter, an input impedance of the igniter is set intentionally or a current adjusting bleeder resistor is set to flow a current greater than or equal to 1 mA through the connecting portion.
