    Abstract: An ignition system is provided, in which a Zener diode is connected in parallel with a spark plug, to suppress torque variation from becoming large in an engine when deterioration of the spark plug is advanced. Specifically, the ignition system includes a secondary coil having an end connected to a center electrode of the spark plug via a connecting path. The connecting path is connected to a constant-voltage path having a grounded end and including the Zener diode. The time from when an ignition signal is switched off until when ignition timing occurs is measured for a plurality of times. The difference between a maximum value and a minimum value among the plurality of measurements is defined to be a variation range. A breakdown voltage of the Zener diode is adjusted based on requirements such as for rendering the variation range to be a predetermined time or smaller.

    Abstract: In a general aspect, a circuit for controlling operation of an ignition circuit including an insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) device can include a current slope detection circuit configured to detect a slope of a current in a primary winding of an ignition coil included in the ignition circuit and a driver circuit coupled with the current slope detection circuit. The current slope detection circuit can be further configured to, during charging of the ignition coil, if the detected slope is above a first limit, provide a first indication to the driver circuit; and, if the detected slope is below a second limit, provide a second indication to the driver circuit. The driver circuit can be configured to, in response to receiving the first indication or the second indication, modify operation of the ignition circuit.

    Abstract: The invention relates to an ignition system for a 14 V or 42 V on-board power system voltage which is connected to the ignition transformer directly via the semiconductor power output stage without an intermediate power unit. After an input signal from a superordinate engine control device, the semiconductor power output stage is switched on by an ignition control device. As a result, a current is built up at the primary side of the ignition transformer. After the predefined maximum current value is reached for the first time, the primary side of the ignition transformer is switched off for a predefined time period. In this time period, a maximum voltage for the spark breakdown is built up at the electrodes of the spark plug according to the principle of self induction. After the spark discharge, the primary side of the ignition transformer is timed and current-limited until the end of the ignition process which is predefined by the superordinate engine control device. The timed control operates with selected, predefined time intervals for switching the semiconductor power output stage alternately on and off. A current limitation is superimposed on the timed control and switches off the primary side of the ignition transformer whenever the primary current reaches a predefined maximum value.

    Abstract: An automotive ignition control system includes a vehicle control computer operable to provide electronic spark timing (EST) signals, a control circuit having a number of coil drive circuits connected thereto, a corresponding number of coil driver devices connected to respective ones of the coil drive circuits and a corresponding number of ignition coils connected to respective ones of the coil driver devices. The control circuit is responsive to an active state of any one of the EST signals to activate a corresponding one of the coil driver devices while inhibiting activation of all others. If any EST signal remains in an active state for an excessive time period, the control circuit is operable to lock-out the corresponding coil driver device from operation until such a fault condition is cleared. The control circuit is preferably operable to accomplish the lock-out function by gradually decreasing the coil current associated with the faulty EST signal in a fashion that does not generate a spark event.
