摘要: A spark plug having multiple spark gaps, where at least one of the spark gaps is located within a prechamber. The spark plug may include a first center wire assembly, a second center wire assembly, an insulator, a metallic shell, a first sparking area with a prechamber cap and a ground electrode for a prechamber spark gap, and a second sparking area with a ground electrode for a main chamber spark gap. The spark plug is designed to maximize engine performance and/or operation by utilizing the multiple spark gaps, where the prechamber spark gap may be used for certain operating conditions where such a spark gap is advantageous and the separate main chamber spark gap may be used for other conditions where a main chamber spark gap is advantageous.

摘要: The invention relates to a spark plug (100) for an internal combustion engine, in particular having a high frequency ignition system, having a central electrode (28; 128), a ground electrode (12; 112) and an electrical insulator (18; 118) arranged between the central electrode (28; 128) and the ground electrode (12; 112), wherein a central electrode connecting point (26; 126) for electrically connecting the central electrode (28; 128) to an ignition system is provided on the insulator (18; 118), wherein the central electrode (28; 128) and the ground electrode (12; 112) project beyond the insulator (18; 118) at an axial end (114) of the spark plug (100) and each form, with a part projecting axially beyond the insulator (18; 118), a central electrode end (140) and a ground electrode end (142), wherein the central electrode end (140) and the ground electrode end (142) are arranged and embodied in such a way that an axial region (170) of a gap (146) is formed between them in an axial direction, wherein the axial region (170) of the gap (146) is spaced apart from the insulator (18; 118), wherein at least one additional electrode (150) is provided which projects beyond the insulator (118) at the axial end (114) of the spark plug (100) and forms, with a part which projects axially beyond the insulator (118), an additional electrode end (154). In this case the additional electrode (150) is arranged electrically insulated from the ground electrode (112) and the central electrode (128), on the spark plug (100), wherein the additional electrode end (154) projects into the axial region (170) of the gap (146) between the central electrode end (140) and the ground electrode end (142) or is arranged into a region (170) of the gap (146) which is radially adjacent to the axial region (170) of the gap (146), and as a result divides the gap (146) into two ignition spark end gaps (156, 166).

摘要: An igniter for a spark ignition system includes a support body fabricated from an electrically insulating material and a metal casing disposed outwardly of and at least partially surrounding the support body. The metal casing has a structure for connecting the metal casing to ground. At least two rod-shaped first electrodes are supported one relative to another by the support body and are electrically isolated one from the other by the support body. Each first electrode has a first end that protrudes from a first end of the support body at a spark forming end of the igniter. The support body is disposed at least partly within an axial channel of a generally cylindrically-shaped second electrode. The second electrode projects past the support body at the spark forming end of the igniter and cooperates with the first ends of the at least two first electrodes to define at least two spark gaps. The second electrode is electrically isolated from the metal casing by an air gap. During use the first electrodes receive a first voltage that is higher than ground and the second electrode receives a second voltage that is lower than the first voltage. A first spark is formed within a first one of the at least two spark gaps and a second spark is formed within a second one of the at least two spark gaps.

摘要: A spark plug according to the invention includes a tubular metal shell, a cylindrical insulator, a plurality of center electrodes, and a plurality of ground electrodes. The meal shell has an end portion in which a plurality of thick-walled portions and a plurality of thin-walled portions are formed. The insulator is fixed in the metal shell. The center electrodes each are retained within one of a plurality of axial bores in the insulator. The ground electrodes each are joined to one of the thick-walled portions to ensure sufficient strength of the ground electrodes. The thin-walled portions each have an inner surface that is outwardly recessed in an angular range including the intersection of the inner surface with a reference line, thereby securing sufficient air pocket size of the spark plug. Accordingly, the spark plug has a high capability to ignite the air-fuel mixture and sufficient strength of the ground electrodes.
