The process for forming the flame-retardant polymer can include reacting an aconitic acid derivative with a flame-retardant phosphorus-based molecule to form a functionalized flame-retardant aconitic acid-derived molecule, and combining the functionalized flame-retardant aconitic acid-derived molecule with a polymer.
