The present invention relates to a molding made of expanded bead foam, wherein at least one fiber (F) is partly within the molding, i.e. is surrounded by the expanded bead foam. The two ends of the respective fibers (F) that are not surrounded by the expanded bead foam thus each project from one side of the corresponding molding. The present invention further provides a panel comprising at least one such molding and at least one further layer (S1). The present invention further provides processes for producing the moldings of the invention from expanded bead foam or the panels of the invention and for the use thereof, for example as rotor blade in wind turbines.

Polyethylene resin foamed particles having a storage elastic modulus of 900 Pa or more and 5000 Pa or less at an angular frequency of 1 rad/second, and the storage elastic modulus is 100000 Pa or less at an angular frequency of 100 rad/second. The storage elastic modulus is obtained in a dynamic viscoelasticity measurement of the a polyethylene resin particles at 190° C. The polyethylene resin foamed particles also have a DSC curve obtained from a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at a temperature rising speed of 10° C./minute within a range of 20° C. to 220° C. The DSC curve has two melting peaks of a melting peak on a low temperature side and a melting peak on a high temperature side.

A process for producing expanded foam beads from pellets comprising at least one biodegradable polyester. The process comprises (i) producing a suspension comprising pellets in an aqueous suspension medium, (ii) impregnating the pellets present in the suspension from step (i) with at least one physical blowing agent by heating the pellet suspension to a depressurization temperature IMT, with stirring, to provide pellets laden with blowing agent in the suspension medium, and (iii) depressurizing the suspension obtained in step (ii) and cooling the depressurized suspension with a liquid aqueous coolant, in order to obtain the expanded foam beads. The blowing agent can be added in step I, or in step ii during the heating phase or following the heating phase. Following the heating phase, the suspension is maintained at a temperature in the range from IMT minus 5° C. to IMT plus 2° C. for 3 to 100 minutes, and the ratio of aqueous coolant to suspension medium is at least 0.3. The invention further relates to expanded foam beads obtained by the process and to moldings that are produced from the expanded foam beads.

Such athermanous materials permit a more energy-efficient grinding process, wherein the ground particles are yielded in the desired platelet form and these ground particles also disperse well in a polystyrene matrix. Therefore the rigid polystyrene foams containing the anthracite coke particles have a density of less than 40 kg/m3 and a thermal conductivity of less than 40 mW/m·K which provides desired thermal insulation properties.
