This invention relates to bio-based polyfunctional carboxylic acids reacted with vinyl ether compounds to form liquid vinyl-blocked bio-based polyfunctional carboxylic acids. These liquid vinyl-blocked bio-based polyfunctional carboxylic acids can be mixed with a polyfunctional vegetable oil-based epoxy resin to form a homogeneous curable coating composition. Upon curing at elevated temperature, thermoset coatings are formed which have excellent hardness, solvent resistance, adhesion, and flexibility. The invention also relates to the use of a curable coating composition comprising at least one polyfunctional vegetable oil-based epoxy resin and at least one vinyl-blocked bio-based polyfunctional carboxylic acid, which may be coated onto a substrate and cured thermally. Methods of making the vinyl-blocked bio-based polyfunctional carboxylic acids and curable coating compositions and substrates containing the same are also disclosed.

The invention relates to curable resin compositions based on an unsaturated prepolymer, a vinyl ether monomer that can be cross-linked with it and one or more other monomers for use as structural resins. The resin composition is cured with the aid of a radical-forming system that is unstable in the temperature range of −20° C. to +110° C., and contains an unsaturated prepolymer having an acid number of less than 10 mg of KOH per g and a vinyl ether monomer according to formula (I) or (II): A—CH═CH—O—R (I) or (A—CH═CH—O)n—R′ (II) with A, R, R′ and n having the described meanings. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of such resin compositions and uses thereof.

A device, and its production method, the device has a substrate and a coating composition, the coating composition being formed by the gas phase or plasma polymerization of a gas comprising at least one organic compound or monomer. The polymerization is carried out using a pulsed discharge having a duty cycle of less than about ⅕, in which the pulse-on time is less than about 100 msec and the pulse-off time is less than about 2000 msec. The duty cycle can also be varied, thus the coating composition can be gradient layered accordingly. The device has a coating composition which is uniform in thickness, pin-hole free, optically transparent in the visible region of the magnetic spectrum, permeable to oxygen, abrasive resistant, wettable and biologically non-fouling.

The invention discloses methods of preparing copolymers from norbornene-type monomers and cationically polymerizable monomers or polymers from catalytically polymerizable monomers by employing Group VIII transition metal ion source in a solvent for said monomers at a temperature in the range from -100.degree. C. to 120.degree. C. Also disclosed are copolymers from norbornene-type monomers and catalytically polymerizable monomers.
