A method of removing buffer gas from a mixture comprising the buffer gas and hyperpolarized noble gas is described. The method includes reacting the buffer gas to produce a reaction product different to the buffer gas. The buffer gas may be reactively removed by one or more of oxidation, reduction, polymerization and binding reactions with solid surfaces. The buffer gas may be molecular hydrogen and/or molecular nitrogen. Apparatus for carrying out the method are also disclosed.

A mixture of noble gases having desirable insulative properties for use as a window fill gas is derived from an air separation process without substantial further separation or concentration of the noble gases in the mixtures. The mixture of noble gases is processed to form the fill gas using relatively economical catalytic oxidation processes and drying techniques to provide a suitable fill gas. The processed noble gas or fill gas may contain from about 89 to 95% krypton, 5 to 8% xenon and 0.5 to 2% contaminants including oxygen, nitrogen, hydrocarbons and other constituents typically found in air separation processing.

The method also includes lowering the concentration of the impurity by conversion of at least a portion of the impurity into a secondary impurity having a greater affinity to the sorbent than the impurity. The method also includes comparing the concentration of the impurity to a polluting concentration and managing the sorption of the gas onto the sorbent according to the comparison.

A process and apparatus for increasing recovery of helium are described. The process includes introducing the stream containing helium and at least one oxidizable component into an oxidation zone in the presence of oxygen to oxidize the oxidizable component forming a first vapor stream and a first liquid stream. The first vapor stream is introduced into a pressure swing adsorption zone to form a purified helium stream and a tail gas stream. The tail gas stream is compressed. The compressed tail gas stream is introduced into a membrane separation zone to form a helium rich permeate stream and a retentate stream. The helium rich permeate stream is compressed and introduced into the oxidation system.
