A method and apparatus for grasping and advancing adjacent layers of thermoplastic film through the side sealing mechanism of a packaging machine includes a plurality of belts which travel about two sets of cooperating pulleys. Each pulley has two circumferential belt grooves defined within it, each belt groove being functionally adapted to allow the travel of a belt along it. A first line of travel is defined along a path which is parallel with the line of travel for articles moving along the wrapping machine. The second line of travel diverges away at a slight angle. The belts are truncated V-belts, the “truncated V” portion of the belts being disposed outwardly of the pulleys. Each set of pulleys is offset such that the belts cooperate in tooth-meshing fashion. A tail pulley of each set is mounted in an offset cam fashion and is spring loaded to apply tension to the belts. Disposed between the belt paths is a hot wire assembly having a similarly longitudinally diverging hot wire. The hot wire assembly utilizes one mounting block which is stationary and another which is rotatable. The mounting blocks are provided with means for allowing insertion of hot wire end connectors at a predetermined depth. An end sealing apparatus includes means for adjusting the end seal location relative to the vertical height of the article to be wrapped.

A device for conveying packages includes a conveyor with a running surface ending with a terminal area, a series of stationary stops and vertical prongs under the stops and above the running surface. The prongs move along a path which follows a circular trajectory in the terminal area. Packages are introduced between two heat-sealing vertical belts in an inlet area. The inlet area of the vertical belts is situated at a distance from the terminal area of the conveyor. A forwarding belt, coplanar with the running surface of the conveyor, is situated between the inlet area and the terminal area of the conveyor. The forwarding belt is operated with a speed higher than the operation speed of the conveyor, so that the packages are not subjected to the prongs action when they rotate upward in the terminal area. The forwarding belt extends from the terminal area of the conveyor, to at least the inlet area of the vertical belts, and the stops protrude to cover the major part of the forwarding belt.

A machine for sealing polyethylene bags or the like of the type having conveyer bands for gripping and transporting the bags to be sealed at a constant velocity from the machine's inlet end, through a heating station, then through a cooling station to the machine's outlet end. The conveyer bands are formed from a material having good release (non-stick) characteristics with respect to the fused thermoplastic. Disposed at the heating and cooling stations, respectively, are heating and chilling bars (heat transfer bars), each being disposed in pairs on opposite sides on and in proximity to the conveyer bands. Means are provided for cyclically opening and closing both pairs of bars relative to the conveyer bands and for translating the bars longitudinally in reciprocating fashion with respect to the moving bands. As bags to be sealed are carried along by the conveyor bands, the heat transfer bars pinch closed on the traveling bands, but since the bars at this time are being translated in the same direction of travel (forward stroke) and at the same velocity as the bands, no band wear occurs. Toward the end of this forward stroke, the heat transfer bars open relative to the bands and the return stroke occurs with substantially zero force between the moving bands and the heat transfer bars. During the return stroke, the bars act as a preheat device to warm up the film prior to the forward stroke to obtain greater speed. Because the bars are of a predetermined greater length than the length of the reciprocating stroke, a continuous package seal is ensured.

A machine for applying lids to containers and for further heat sealing a metal foil membrane to each container beneath its lid includes a main conveyor and a timing screw at the feed end of the conveyor for releasing open top containers onto the conveyor at equally spaced intervals. As the containers move along the main conveyor, captivator blocks, which are carried on synchronized chains located at each side of the main conveyor, converge toward and close upon the side walls of the containers so as to confine the containers in the horizontal direction while they move along the main conveyor. Lids are applied to the containers at a lid applicator while the containers are gripped by the captivator blocks. Thereafter the containers pass beneath an overhead belt and the lower pass of this belt is backed by a pair of skid plates and a plurality of rollers, with the rollers being interposed between the two skid plates. An induction coil creates a magnetic field beneath the rollers, and this field is of sufficient intensity to elevate the temperature of each foil membrane to above the point at which the membrane will bond to the rim of its container. As each container passes beneath the first skid plate, the force applied to the lid squeezes the membrane against the container rim with a constant force and excludes foreign particles from the interface. Thereafter the membrane is heated and as it is heated, the rollers apply an undulating force to the membrane, causing the heated membrane to seal snugly against the rim of the container. Finally the second skid plate applies a constant force to the membrane and holds it down against the container rim, allowing the membrane to bond to the rim as the membrane cools.
