Abstract: Disclosed is a method of producing a vesicle containing a metallic nanoparticle that is covalently bound to at least one hydrophilic polymer and at least one hydrophobic polymer, wherein the method involves dispersing the polymer-bound metallic nanoparticle in an organic solvent, adding an aqueous solution containing a dispersing aid to form a mixed solution, sonicating the mixed solution to form an emulsion; and removing the organic solvent from the emulsion until the vesicle forms. Using this method, the formed vesicle has a diameter of 20-150 nm, which is useful for a method of conducting photothermal therapy (PTT) for killing cells, such as cancer cells.

Abstract: We disclose a composition comprising an echogenic liposome (ELIP) having an exterior surface, an interior surface, and at least one bilayer comprising at least one lipid selected from the group consisting of saturated phospholipids, unsaturated phospholipids, mixed phospholipids, and cholesterol, and a thrombolytic compound trapped by the ELIP. We also disclose a method of treating a medical condition in a patient characterized by a thrombus in the patient's vasculature, comprising administering to the patient the composition in an amount effective to reduce the size of the thrombus.

Abstract: The invention provides a composition comprising a matrix of chitosan and a tannin wherein the chitosan is electrostatically bonded to the tannin to form a chitosan-tannin composite material. The chitosan can be partially or fully deacetylated, and the tannin can be a monomeric or an oligomeric proanthocyanidin or a hydrolysable tannin. The chitosan-tannin composite material can be a nanoparticle, a hydrogel film, a bio-foam, or a biogel, or the chitosan-tannin composite material can coat a liposome. The composite materials can be used for drug delivery, for antibacterial and/or antifungal applications, for tissue engineering applications, for wound healing applications, or they can be used as adjuvants for vaccination, including oral vaccinations. The invention also provides methods of preparing the composite materials and their various forms.

Abstract: The method comprises: a) receiving a plurality of imaging signals of the object over a period of time; b) measuring the signal intensity in each of the plurality of imaging signals corresponding to a point on the object; and c) curve fitting the measured signal intensity of the point on the object to a bi-exponential function comprising a first and a second exponential term, the first exponential term representing the decrease in concentration of the contrast agent which is free over time and the second exponential term representing a decrease in concentration of the contrast agent which is retained on the object over time.

Abstract: Peptide vectors having high KDR binding affinity and processes for making such vectors are provided. The peptide vectors may be conjugated to phospholipids and included in ultrasound contrast agent compositions. Such ultrasound contrast agents are particularly useful in therapeutic and diagnostic methods, such as in imaging KDR-containing tissue and in the evaluation and treatment of angiogenic processes associated with neoplastic conditions. The present invention also provides processes for the large scale production of highly pure dimeric and monomeric peptide phospholipid conjugates as well as precursor materials used to form the conjugates. The present invention further provides processes for the large scale production of highly pure peptide phospholipid conjugates which contain very low levels of TFA.
