Abstract:
A drain assembly for diesel engine fuel filters and the like consists of separate drain and vent valves mounted closely adjacent one another in the bottom wall of the collection bowl of the filter and intercoupled so that actuation of the drain valve also actuates the vent valve after the drain valve has been opened. The vent valve is a spring biased valve located higher than the drain valve and preferably is a tire core type valve. The drain valve may be a spring biased push type valve or a valve threadedly mounted in the bottom wall of the collection bowl for vertical movement to open a valve seat in the collection bowl and in either embodiment includes a shoulder interengageable with the vent valve for actuation of the latter. Both drain valves include a hose connector which rotates relative to the collection bowl or cartridge assembly to facilitate replacement of the latter, the threaded type drain valve including a snap-in type swivel for the hose connector.
Abstract:
A filter assembly and associated collection bowl for a single or dual contaminant collection zone arrangement use a self-sealing o-ring in combination with a threaded mating arrangement in order to withstand high pressure differentials. The filter assembly may include an end cap having a plurality of downwardly projecting ribs distinct from a threaded connector ring upon which the end cap rests or the ribs may be integral with the connector ring and separate from the end cap. The lower end of the filter housing includes a number of contaminant channels between adjacent pairs of the ribs, the contaminant channels leading to corresponding contaminant outlets.
Abstract:
A filter element removably located in a housing having a central valve structure. The element has an end cap with a valve actuating portion. The valve actuating portion includes a cylindrical portion and an annular base projecting radially inward from the cylindrical portion. The valve actuating portion includes a plurality of thin, flat keys spaced around the annular base and projecting radially inward from the cylindrical portion and axially outward from the base. The keys engage the valve structure in the housing when the element is installed, and open up a flow passage through the housing.
Abstract:
A top-loading filter housing has a spin-on combination cartridge and cover in a unitary assembly. The cartridge is an annular filter medium surrounding a perforated center tube and supported in an imperforate bottom endcap, being joined by potting compound to provide a consolidated structure. An annular seal is retained in a central opening in the endcap and is sized for a sliding fit on a vertical standpipe, centrally supported in the filter housing. The cover portion of the cartridge is a molded, circular, glass-filled nylon plate having a depending peripheral flange threadedly receivable in the open, upper end of the filter housing. The cover includes a central well in which the filter medium and centertube are received, both being secured and sealed by potting compound so that the cover and cartridge may be replaced as an assembly.

Abstract:
A apparatus (10) for enabling the discharge of air and vapor from the head space of a fuel tank while preventing the discharge of liquid therethrough, has an inlet (12) in communication with the head space and an outlet (14) in connection with atmosphere. The apparatus has an internal chamber (22). A body (54) is positioned above an orifice (44) in a retainer (36) inside the chamber. A relief element (72) with an opening (74) therethrough is positioned between the body and the outlet. When air and vapor flow through the device, Bernoulli's Principle causes the body to be suspended between the orifice and the opening in the relief element. When liquid enters the chamber, the body floats upward in the liquid and if the chamber fills with liquid, blocks the opening to prevent the discharge of liquid from the device. Liquid prevented from flowing out of chamber 22, flows back into the fuel tank when fluid is no longer being delivered into the device.
Abstract:
A fuel filter assembly (10) for filtering diesel fuel includes a filter head (12), a spin on replaceable element (13) and a collection bowl (15) removable from the element. The element includes a casing with a turned-in edge portion at a lower end. An adaptor ring (69) is supported on said edge portion inside the element and includes an annular threaded portion (71). The collection bowl has an outer peripheral wall (74) with an annular threaded portion engaging the threaded portion of the adaptor ring. The outer peripheral wall of the bowl has an annular shoulder abutting the turned-in edge portion of said casing to clamp said casing between the adaptor ring and the bowl, when the bowl is attached to the element. A seal (76) between the shoulder and the casing further serves to hold the element and the bowl in fluid tight relation.
Abstract:
A fuel filter assembly for diesel fuel includes a filter head structure, spin-on replaceable element and threaded collection bowl. An annular heater housing is secured in the filter head for warming the fuel prior to passage through the filter medium with a pair of positive temperature coefficient heater discs providing the self-regulating heater function. A check valve is housed in the inlet chamber of the filter head in bypass connection with the filter medium to vent air from the chamber and to establish a return path for fuel from the filter. A restrictive orifice in the check valve limits fuel flow in the bypass path and an elastomeric duck-bill type valve provides the check valve function.
Abstract:
A filter assembly and associated filter unit includes a repelling-action filter media for use in vacuum or suction side fuel filter applications. In particular, the filter unit is a screw on unit with centrally located threads at opposite ends of the filter unit and with a specifically designed end cap allowing use of the filter unit with a dual zone collection bowl normally used for coalescing pressure side filter applications. The end cap includes holes which allow use of both of the collection zones in spite of the normal isolation between the collection zones.
