The invention is concerned with a method of deriving mechanical work from a combustion gas in internal combustion engines and reciprocating internal combustion engines for carrying out the method. The invention includes methods and apparatuses for managing combustion charge densities, temperatures, pressures and turbulence in order to produce a true mastery within the power cylinder in order to increase fuel economy, power, and torque while minimizing polluting emissions. In its preferred embodiments, the method includes the steps of (i) producing an air charge, (ii) controlling the temperature, density and pressure of the air charge, (iii) transferring the air charge to a power cylinder of the engine such that an air charge having a weight and density selected from a range of weight and density levels ranging from below atmospheric weight and density to heavier-than-atmospheric weight and density is introduced into the power cylinder, and (iv) then compressing the air charge at a lower-than-normal compression ratio, (v) causing a pre-determined quantity of charge-air and fuel to produce a combustible mixture, (vi) causing the mixture to be ignited within the power cylinder, and (vii) allowing the combustion gas to expand against a piston operable in the power cylinders with the expansion ratio of the power cylinders being substantially greater than the compression ratio of the power cylinders of the engine. In addition to other advantages, the invented method is capable of producing mean effective cylinder pressures ranging from lower-than-normal to higher-than-normal. In the preferred embodiments, the mean effective cylinder pressure is selectively variable (and selectively varied) throughout the mentioned range during the operation of the engine. In an alternate embodiment related to constant speed-constant load operation, the mean effective cylinder pressure is selected from the range and the engine is configured, in accordance with the present invention, such that the mean effective cylinder pressure range is limited, being varied only in the amount required for producing the power, torque and speed of the duty cycle for which the engine is designed.

There is provided a cylinder injection type internal combustion engine capable of performing stratified charge operation at the time of a vehicle speed of 120 km/h and/or an engine rotational speed of 3200 rpm to enhance the fuel efficiency and/or to observe the emission regulations. In the internal combustion engine, a stratum of air and/or air flow is formed between a fuel spray injected from an injection valve and the top face of a piston and/or the wall surface of a combustion chamber, and a face shape contrived to guide the air flow is formed on the top face of the piston. Also, the stratified charge operation can be performed even at the time of cold start or cranking.

A three-valve cylinder head system for a direct-injected spark-ignited (DISI) internal combustion engine. Two inlet ports are positioned in opposite quadrants of the cylinder head, with the fuel injector directing fuel spray into a third quadrant and the exhaust port being positioned in the fourth quadrant. A helicoid intake port and an axially directed intake port generate a swirl-type air flow in the piston cylinder without the aid of flow activation devices. The spark plug is positioned centrally adjacent the longitudinal axis of the cylinder bore. The piston has a bowl in its upper surface with an enlarged downstream area and a harbor area adjacent and past the spark plug which allow the swirl-type air flow to mix with the fuel spray and provide an appropriate fuel air mixture at the spark plug.

An induction system for an internal combustion engine having at least one intake passage that is configured to generate a tumble and swirl to the intake charge. This is accomplished by providing a masked section adjacent the valve seat so that the flow entering the combustion chamber is directed across the combustion chamber to generate the tumble action. There is also provided a secondary intake passage that delivers a charge to the combustion chamber in a substantially unrestricted fashion so as to permit high power outputs. The secondary intake passage has the flow through it controlled by a throttle valve that is closed under low and mid-range running conditions.

In order to supply a sufficient quantity of lubricating oil to the entire valve operating mechanism, we designed a lubrication device for an overhead valve engine. A first breather passage goes from the valve operating mechanism chamber to the crankcase, passing through the cylinder head and cylinder. The first breather passage opens in the vicinity of the spring retainer for the intake valve on the surface of the cylinder head which faces the valve operating mechanism chamber for the valve operating mechanism. The opening of the first passage and the vicinity of the exhaust valve are connected by a second breather passage. This second passage comprises a groove formed by cutting in the valve operating mechanism chamber surface of the cylinder head, and a tunnel formed between an oil guide wall which goes up from the valve operating mechanism chamber surface of the cylinder head and the peripheral wall of the head. One end of this groove connects to the opening of the first breather passage.
