One viewpoint control program is selected from a plurality of viewpoint control programs, based on program selection data that is set for a course, and the viewpoint is controlled to follow the movement of a moving body, based on the selected viewpoint control program. The viewpoint is controlled by using viewpoint control parameters that are set for the course and are linked to the program selection data. On an ordinary road surface, the line-of-sight direction varies with changes in the inclination of the course, but on an undulating road surface it remains fixed, regardless of changes in the inclination of the course. During an ordinary jump, the line-of-sight direction changes during a fixed time towards the target direction, but during a jump to a high landing point or low landing point, the time during which the line-of-sight direction is changed to the target direction can be varied.

A multifunctional peripheral processing subsystem external to the game microprocessor and coprocessor is described which executes commands for handling player controller input/output to thereby lessen the processing burden on the graphics processing subsystem. The video game methodology features camera perspective or point of view control features. The system changes the "camera" angle (i.e., the displayed point of view in the three-dimensional world) automatically based upon various conditions and in response to actuation of a plurality of distinct controller keys/buttons/switches, e.g., four "C" buttons in the exemplary embodiment. The control keys allow the user at any time to move in for a close up or pull back for a wide view or pan the camera to the right and left to change the apparent camera angle. Such user initiated camera manipulation permits a player to better judge jumps or determine more precisely where an object is located in relation to the player controlled character.

In one method embodiment, an operation includes providing an interface for presenting an overhead view of an interactive environment of a video game on a head mounted display (HMD). The method also provides an operation for providing a magnifying window for displaying a magnified view of the interactive environment, where the magnified view is associated with a second vantage point that is closer to the interactive environment than is a first vantage point of the overhead view. The method further provides an operation for tracking a real-world position of a controller of the spectator and moving the location of the magnifying window to correspond to the real-world position of the controller.
