Processes, methods, uses, apparatus, and/or products such as surface coverings such as floor coverings, wall coverings, furniture coverings, or the like, having a textile or fabric show surface, decorative layer, or face and an optional backing are provided. The textile show surface, layer or face is optionally saturated, coated, and/or covered, or includes a protective film, coating composition or wear surface such as a transparent resin or polymer material. In at least one exemplary embodiment, the textile show surface is in overlying relation to a backing of or including agglomerated adjoined particle elements. In at least another exemplary embodiment, the textile show surface is in overlying relation to a backing of or including a foam cushion layer. In yet another exemplary embodiment, the textile show surface is in overlying relation to a backing which is a blend or combination of a particle and a foam backing. In particular embodiments, but not exclusively, the invention may relate to surface coverings such as floor coverings including but not limited to carpet, carpet tile, flooring, floor tile, rugs, area rugs, runners, mats, floor mats, stabilized broadloom, modular flooring, roll goods, or the like. The surface covering may incorporate a tufted, bonded, knit, woven, non-woven, needled, flocked, or the like textile or fabric show surface, face material, decorative textile layer, or the like. The textile layer may be saturated, covered, and/or coated with at least one film or film-forming composition which is desirably transparent or translucent when cured. Alternatively or in addition, the face yarn or fiber may include one or more coatings or layers such as clear, translucent and/or colored coatings or layers. For example, the face yarn may include a core yarn or fiber or filament or material covered with one or more coatings, cladding, sheaths, layers, wear layers, films, and/or the like. It is additionally desirable that the film or film-forming composition or the one or more coatings or layers is wear resistant, soil resistant, stain resistant, aesthetically pleasing, fusable, and/or the like. Optional adhesive layers, adhesive films, stabilizing layers, textile backings, films, and/or the like may be disposed above, in, and/or below the flexible and/or resilient backing. Friction enhancing, adhesive, or installation facilitating materials or coatings may be added to and/or on the underside of the backing. Alternatively or in addition, a textile or fabric backing with a friction enhancing coating may be added below the backing.

A composite floor covering having an upper layer of a decorative fabric, a dimensionally stabilizing intermediate layer, and an optional lower cushioning layer has at least the upper surface of the decorative fabric coated with a protective polymeric coating in a manner such that the hand of the decorative fabric layer is substantially retained. The materials of the fabric layer, stabilizing layer, and cushioning layer (if provided) as well as the form of attachment therebetween, cooperate to render the floor covering substantially impervious to liquid.

A breathable, decorative wallcovering having a smooth, continuous, aesthetically appealing exposed surface which can be printed with a design or pattern having sharply defined edges, and having a relatively high moisture permeability, includes a porous polymeric ply fused to and supported by a nonwoven substrate ply which consists of an array of hydroentangled fibers. The porous polymeric ply is formed by thermally fusing a plastisol coating, which is applied to the nonwoven substrate ply, and which has a thickness sufficiently low to permit localized variations in fiber orientation and small variations in the thickness of the nonwoven substrate ply to cause the formation of a multiplicity of miniature discontinuities which are substantially invisible to the unaided eye and which are randomly distributed throughout the coating. The plastisol coating is, however, thick enough to allow the formation of a coating which upon thermal fusion provides a polymeric ply having a smooth continuous appearance. Upon heating the plastisol coating to a temperature which is sufficient to cause fusion of resins contained therein, a highly permeable polymeric ply having the appearance of a smooth, continuous film is formed. The wallcovering is particularly useful where a smooth surface is desired for aesthetic reason and where high moisture permeability is also desired.

A sheet material having a decorative surface and a working surface, for application to a support surface is disclosed. A substantial area of the working surface is provided with a tacky, discontinuous layer of pressure sensitive adhesive. A pattern of non-adhesive projections which have a height equal to or greater than the thickness of the adhesive are provided within the discontinuities on the working surface.

In the production of decorated tufted carpet tiles, a tufted carpet web is made by tufting a pile yarn in a substrate, precoating and backing the tufted substrate on the backside, followed by dyeing, imprinting with a pattern, steaming, washing and drying the carpet web, and thereafter by punching or cutting tiles from the carpet web in the process, the carpet web, prior to the dyeing step and preferably after precoating, is heat treated by being exposed to a temperature of 120.degree.-200.degree. C., preferably 140.degree.-170.degree. C., for 1-8 minutes, preferably for 3-5 minutes, while it is freely supported on an auxiliary carrier, and then subjected to cooling to below 50.degree. C.

Filled thermoplastic compositions having enhanced elongation and useful, e.g., as sound-deadening sheeting for automotive carpet, are obtained by blending about 0-50% by weight of an ethylene interpolymer, such as ethylene/vinyl ester, ethylene/unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids or esters of said unsaturated acids, etc.; 0-20% by weight of a plasticizer selected from the group consisting of processing oils, epoxidized oils, polyesters, polyethers, polyether esters and combinations thereof; about 40-90% by weight of filler; from about 0.05 to about 5.0% by weight of at least one surface active agent such as sulfonates, sulfates, phosphates, etc.; and optionally, modifying resins, such as tackifiers and certain ethylene and propylene homo- and copolymers.

Composite fiber structures comprising a sheet of fibrous material having an open-patterned web of plastic material at least partially embedded in the fibers of the sheet are made by applying to at least one surface of a sheet of fibrous material, such as felted, knitted, woven or otherwise associated wool or other animal, vegetable or synthetic fiber, an open-patterned web of plastic material and subjecting the web successively to conditions effective to cause at least partial penetration of the fibrous sheet by the plastic material and to conditions effective to harden the plastic material, preferably with the concomitant application of pressure to the plastic material while it is in flowable condition. After hardening the plastic the assembly may be subjected to wetting out and drying to effect further expansion of the fibrous sheet between the elements of the plastic web. The fibrous material may be given a differential color from the plastic material by dyeing the fibrous material after the application of the web of plastic material or by applying to the fibrous sheet a web of differently colored plastic material.
