    摘要: A vacuum insulated panel having high thermal insulating value and long vacuum life, and a method of making such a panel are disclosed. The panel is formed of peripherally welded metal wall members which define a cavity within which, in one embodiment, a compressed block of particulate material is disposed. The particulate material, in this embodiment, serves as a barrier to radiant thermal transmission through the panel, acts as a getter to maintain the vacuum in the panel, and supports the walls of the panel against collapse when the cavity is evacuated. The vacuum insulated panel can be covered with a polyurethane foam insulating material. According to a further embodiment of the invention, the filler within the cavity is a sandwich comprising a compressed layer of particulate material suspended between two layers of fiberglass. In such further embodiment, the layer of particulate material, which can be compressed in situ, serves as a getter and a barrier to radiant thermal transmission, while the fiberglass, making up the overall majority of the filler of the cavity, provides support for the panel members defining the cavity upon evacuation.

    摘要: The disclosure is directed to a composite thermal insulator including a Freon gas expanded plastic, and an evacuated powder insulation. The present invention provides a composite thermal insulator light in weight and having a superior heat insulating performance over a long period through replacement of a thick metallic container conventionally used for the evacuated powder insulation and considered indispensable for withstanding a load at one atmospheric pressure and for preventing vacuum leakage, by a film-like plastic container, with activated carbon disposed in it.More specifically, the composite thermal insulator of the present invention includes a Freon gas expanded plastic, a film-like plastic container evacuated to form a vacuum in its interior, and directly contacting and/or covered by the expanded plastic, and activated carbon or inorganic powder containing activated carbon tightly enclosed in the plastic container, light in weight, having a heat conductivity lower than 0.01 kcal/mh.degree.C. and a mechanical strength sufficient for actual use, with almost no variations with time in the heat insulating property.

    摘要: This invention relates to a method for applying preformed cellular glass insulation blocks to the exterior surface of a spherical metallic storage vessel by the steps of:(a) cleaning the exterior surface of the vessel;(b) maintaining the vessel at a temperature of 80.degree.-100.degree. F.;(c)(1) beveling the side walls of a preformed cellular glass insulation block,(2) dishing the inner surface of the preformed block to correspond to the contour of the spherical vessel to which the block is to be adhered,(3) applying uncatalyzed urethane-modified asphalt adhesive stored at 35.degree.-50.degree. F. just prior to use to the thus dished inner surface and beveled edges of the cellular glass block to completely fill the dished surface,(4) spraying the thus-applied urethane-modified asphalt adhesive with a curing agent, and(5) pressing the block against the surface of the vessel whereby adhesive oozes from between the block and the surface of the vessel; and(d) repeating steps of (c) with successive blocks, each of which is butted firmly against adjacent previously-applied blocks, until the entire surface of the vessel is covered.
