An apparatus and method for use with a carbureted internal combustion engine that accurately controls the amount of fuel that passes through the carburetor into the combustion chamber of the engine. A controlled triggering system controls the activation and deactivation of a solenoid. The solenoid, in turn, operates a plunger that varies the flow of fuel during the fuel intake cycle of the engine depending on the amount of fuel needed by the engine under any operating load. Thus, an engine can run leaner under partial load and run richer during periods of load and acceleration. By controlling the air-to-fuel ratio lower engine emissions and fuel consumption can be achieved.

An apparatus is provided for monitoring ignition in individual cylinders of a multi-cylinder engine of the type having an ignition system which includes a separate transformer for each cylinder. Each transformer has primary and secondary coils. The secondary coil is connected in series with a spark gap in an associated one of the cylinders. The ignition system further includes selector switches for receiving cylinder select signals and responsively connecting respective transformer primary coils. The current flows through the primary coil resulting in a voltage potential across an associated spark gap which normally increases to a magnitude sufficient to cause a spark across the spark gap. A first circuit receives the cylinder select signals, senses time delay between the reception of a cylinder select signal and sparking in a respective cylinder and responsively produces a delay signal indicative of the sensed time delay. A diagnostics controller receives the delay signal, compares the delay signal to a plurality of preselected thresholds and responsively produces a status signal indicating the status of ignition in a respective cylinder.

An apparatus (8) is provided for controlling ignition in an engine having a ignition system (10), an engine cylinder sensor (48), and a piston disposed in the cylinder and being movable to a top dead center (TDC) position. The cylinder sensor (48) produces a first signal representing the position of the piston within the cylinder and having a frequency responsive to engine speed. The ignition system (10) includes a transformer (24) having a primary coil (26) which is energized in response to a cylinder select signal to produce sparking across an associated spark plug gap (22). A first circuit (98) is provided for sensing a delay between production of the cylinder select signal and the time at which current through a respective primary coil exceeds a preselected current level, and responsively producing a timing error signal. The cylinder selector (36) processes the timing error signal to produce a timing offset signal The cylinder selector then delivers a cylinder select signal as a function of the timing offset and a desired cylinder firing time. In this manner, the apparatus (8) compensates for the timing error introduced by the time required for transformer energization.

A constant energy, constant spark rate ignitor system suitable for use in high energy ignition systems. The ignitor system includes a vacuum interrupter switch through which an energy storage capacitor discharges to fire a surface gap spark plug. Discharge of the energy storage capacitor through the vacuum interrupter can only occur upon actuation of the switch. The quantity of energy stored in the energy storage capacitor and the timing of capacitor discharge is therefore not a function of ambient operating conditions or the dielectric properties of the switch and can therefore be independently controlled. A voltage comparator and spark rate clock are used to trigger closure of the vacuum interrupter switch and fire the plug when the capacitor contains the desired quantity of energy and a clock signal is present. A current proving circuit is also provided to verify that current passes through the spark plug.

Disclosed herein is a capacitor discharge ignition system adapted for use with an internal combustion engine and comprising a charge capacitor, an ignition coil primary winding, an ignition SCR, and a spark retard circuit connected in series relationship with the charge capacitor, the primary winding, and the ignition SCR. The spark retard circuit comprises a thyristor having an anode-cathode path connected in series relationship with the charge capacitor, the primary winding, and the ignition SCR, an RC delay network including a capacitor and a resistor with a junction therebetween, the network having one end connected to the thyristor anode and having an opposite end connected to the thyristor gate, and a zener diode connected between the thyristor gate and the RC delay network junction for selectively preventing full discharge of the capacitor through the primary winding for a predetermined period of time after the ignition SCR is rendered conductive, thereby allowing for over advancing at mid rpm range and providing for automatic spark retard at higher engine rpm. In one embodiment of the invention a potentiometer replaces the resistor in the RC delay network to allow for further adjustment of ignition spark timing.

A multiple spark discharge ignition system having a high energy capacitative discharge ignition current which provides multiple striking at the spark gap of a combustion chamber. The timing of the firing can be retarded relative to the power stroke. The duration of the time interval during which the strikes occur is also controlled. In its preferred form, the present invention utilizes the ignition points of an internal combustion engine for its timing signal and the distributor for distributing the high voltage current to the spark gap associated with each of the combustion chambers.
