A crash sensor system determines that a crash involving the vehicle will occur or is occurring and initiates inflation of the first and second airbags. The second airbag may be inflated prior to inflation of the first airbag such that inflation of the second airbag causes the occupant to be moved away from the interior surface of the vehicle and into a better position for deployment of the first airbag. In one exemplary embodiment, the first airbag is a side curtain airbag and the second airbag is arranged in a door of the vehicle to move the occupant away from the door.

Conventional airbag apparatuses have a very large volume for offering the greatest possible protection for the passenger, and therefore block the driver's view of the traffic situation and preclude further steering actions. Additionally, the passenger is endangered if he is in an atypical sitting position. Multi-stage airbag systems permit an adaptation of the degree of deployment to the size and/or position of the passenger, but are very complicated and slow. Proposed is a passenger-protection apparatus having a first airbag for a first stage of deployment, and a second airbag for a second stage of deployment, which occurs after and independently of the first, with the shape of the first airbag and the quantity of gas supplied to it being determined such that, when filled with this quantity of gas, the first airbag has a collision zone that corresponds to the diameter of the steering wheel, and has a short expansion length in the direction of the passenger, in relation to the distance between the collision zone and the passenger. A second airbag, which can be deployed independently, laterally surrounds the first airbag, partially or preferably completely, in the manner of a hose in the filled state, and compresses the first airbag, so the expansion length of the first airbag increases. Whereas the first airbag is deployed early and independently of the position of the passenger, the second airbag can be filled afterward with different quantities of gas when a second acceleration threshold is exceeded, as a function of the position and/or size of the passenger, by a controllable gas source, which can preferably be deployed in stages, thereby establishing the shape of the two airbags and the deformation of the first airbag.

A side airbag arrangement for a motor vehicle has a plurality of airbag compartments mounted next to each other above a side window in a region of the roof frame and window pillar of the motor vehicle and stored there in a folded-together fashion in the deactivated state. In the activated state, the airbag compartments extend in front of the side window to provide a cover starting from that region. Each of the airbag compartments can be filled independently of the other by a control unit to achieve an improved protective effect with reduced complexity. For this purpose, each of the airbag compartments is connected by a valve to a gas duct which is mounted in the region of the roof frame and window pillar and can receive gas from two gas generators at opposite ends. The valves are controllable independently of each other.

An inflation apparatus that includes at least two inflators for selected use in inflating an air bag is disclosed. In one embodiment, the two inflators include a micro hybrid inflator and a pyrotechnic inflator. The micro hybrid inflator includes a pressurized medium having oxygen that contributes to the inflation gases that fill the inflatable. The pyrotechnic inflator is essentially free of any such stored gas. Both inflators include a fuel-rich gas generating material. In another embodiment, instead of a micro hybrid inflator, another pyrotechnic inflator is utilized that includes an oxygen-rich gas generating material. In still another embodiment, a fluid fuel acts as a source of oxygen for the fuel-rich gas generating material of the pyrotechnic inflator. When both inflators of the dual inflation apparatus are activated, the oxygen gas that is present is used in further combusting products of combustion from the pyrotechnic inflator having the fuel-rich gas generating material. Preferably, activation of each inflator depends upon whether the vehicle collision that results in air bag activation is low impact or high impact. In at least one embodiment, the two inflators can be affixed to a support assembly with a desired arrangement of the inflators to provide a low profile and reduced space usage by the inflation apparatus.
