Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A base station may identify, for a user equipment (UE), a configuration for receiving a set of downlink control information (DCI) messages on one or more layers of a set of layers of a downlink shared channel. The base station may transmit, to the UE, a first DCI message in a downlink control channel, where the first DCI message may schedule resources of the downlink shared channel for the set of piggybacking DCI messages. The UE may receive the first DCI message and identify the configuration for receiving the set of DCI messages on the one or more layers of the downlink shared channel. The UE may receive, from the base station, the set of DCI messages on the one or more layers of the downlink shared channel based on the identified configuration.

For instance, a user equipment (UE) may receive, from a base station, a first downlink control information message in a downlink control channel, the first downlink control information message scheduling first resources of a downlink shared channel for a second downlink control information message. The UE may identify a first, UE-specific scrambling sequence for the second downlink control information message. The UE may receive, from the base station, the second downlink control information message based on the first scrambling sequence, the second downlink control information message scheduling second resources of the downlink shared channel for a data message. The UE may receive, from the base station, the data message in the second resources scheduled by the second downlink control information message.

Abstract: A non-geosynchronous satellite system, where each satellite has an antenna (perhaps a multi-element antenna) to form a beam pattern comprising a set of beams in the footprint of the satellite, where in one implementation each beam is substantially elliptical in shape having a minor axis and a major axis, where the minor axes are substantially collinear and the major axes are substantially oriented east to west. For a satellite, power is reduced or turned off for a subset of the set of beams, wherein each beam in the subset is reduced at or below a corresponding power level such that when a beam is powered above its corresponding power level an equivalent power flux-density (EPFD) exceeds a limit at some point on the Earth's surface.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating a satellite system including different satellites that may belong to different types of satellite constellations. In some implementations, the satellite system may include a LEO satellite constellation and one or more non-LEO satellite constellations that can be used to increase the forward link capacity of the LEO satellite constellation, for example, by allowing an LEO satellite to offload at least some of its forward link traffic to one of the non-LEO satellites. The user terminals can dynamically switch forward link communications between a LEO satellite and a non-LEO satellite while maintaining a return link connection with the LEO satellite.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating a controller for a satellite communications system during inter-beam handovers. In some aspects, the controller may perform an inter-beam handover by switching communications with a user terminal from a first beam to a second beam of a satellite. The controller receives a feedback message form the user terminal, via the first beam, after the inter-beam handover is completed, and may then selectively retransmit data to the user terminal via the second beam based at least in part on the feedback message.

Abstract: Various aspects of the disclosure relate to allocating control signaling resources for multiple carrier scenarios. In an example implementation, N-to-1 mapping is used between forward link control signaling resource allocation indices (e.g., control channel elements) and return link control signaling resources (e.g., for ACK/NACK signaling) indices in each return link component carrier. A collision between forward link control signaling assignments for different user terminals (UTs) may occur when UT-specific search spaces overlap each other. Such a collision may be avoided, for example, by scheduling different UTs on different return link component carriers, scheduling return link grants instead of forward link grants, or scheduling a different forward link control signaling candidate that is associated with a different forward link control signaling resource allocation index.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses are disclosed for a user terminal (UT) to transmit data to a network controller via a satellite in a satellite system. The UT may begin transmitting, during a time period, a first portion of the data using contention-based resources of the satellite system prior to receiving a grant of scheduled return link resources of the satellite system. The UT may also transmit, on the contention-based resources, a buffer status report (BSR) during the time period. The UT may terminate data transmissions on the contention-based resources after an expiration of the time period or upon receiving the grant of scheduled return link resources. After receiving the grant, the UT may transmit a second portion of the data on the scheduled return link resources.
