The present invention has an object to provide a pitcher type water purifier and a purification cartridge for the water purifier, which can adsorb and eliminate chemical substances such as chlorine and the like from raw water, eliminate bacteria and, even when the purified water has been stored for a long period of time, can prevent propagation of bacteria and can provide purified water with high safety in a short period of time. A pitcher type water purifier (1) comprises a casing (10) divided into upper and lower parts, as a raw water reservoir portion (1a) and a purified water reservoir portion (1b) and having a purified water pouring opening (11b) communicated with the purified water reservoir portion (1b) and a purification cartridge (20) replaceably disposed between the raw water reservoir portion (1a) and the purified water reservoir portion (1b) and having a raw water inlet (23) open to the raw water reservoir portion (1a) and a purified water outlet (24) open to the purified water reservoir portion (1b). In the purification cartridge (20), adsorbent (26) is filled in an upper layer of the interior communicated with the raw water inlet (23) and hollow fiber membranes (27b) are filled in a lower layer thereof, at a filling density a of 25-58%.

A process and a device for the continuous extraction and analysis of chemical substances from solute fluid using membrane is characterized by passing solute fluid 14 through housing 20 on one side of a semipermeable structure 19 and simultaneously passing extracting fluid 11 through the housing on the other side of the semipermeable membrane structure. Substances passing from solute fluid through the semipermeable membrane structure into the extracting fluid are delivered by the extracting fluid as carrier, into a sorbing phase 27. Cooling 28 and heating 24 of the sorbing phase allows substances to be concentrated and detected by detector 50 and to be continuously monitored. Extracting fluid may be a gas or a pressurized dense gas. Extraction using pressurized dense gas and membrane is achieved by maintaining the pressure of the solute fluid and the pressurized dense gas within a high pressure housing substantially equal. Previously, solute fluids were analyzed using batch processes with liquid-liquid extraction, extraction cartridges or purge and trap. Continuous extraction and analysis using membranes eliminates the use of organic solvents and provides inexpensive and continuous monitoring of volatile, semi-volatile, non-volatile and polar compounds in water and other fluids.

A solid body having extremely narrow passages formed therein for the separation and conveyance of gases by surface diffusion. Because of the relatively high flow resistance resulting from the extremely small cross sections of the passages, the gas conveyance through the solid body can be performed substantially exclusively by surface diffusion. Only those gas particles which are adsorbed on the solid body or on the wall of the passages will be conveyed through the solid body. The surface diffusion can be controlled by suitable selection of the gas/solid body combination. The diffusion is influenced particularly by the temperature of the solid body. When, in the case of a two-gas mixture, the solid body is heated to a temperature above the desorption temperature of one of the gases and below the desorption temperature of the other gas, only the gas particles of the adsorbed gas are conveyed on the passage walls by surface diffusion.

A self-supported low pressure drop hollow fiber membrane panel includes a pair of layers of non-permeable material having opposite external and internal sides, and a multiplicity of hollow fibers of permeable material extending between and in generally transverse relationship to the layers of non-permeable material. Opposite end portions of the hollow fibers are encapsulated by the respective layers of non-permeable material and are open at the external sides thereof. Elongated portions of the hollow fibers have elongated internal bores providing flow communication between the open opposite end portions of the hollow fibers. The elongated portions of the hollow fibers extend between the internal sides of the respective layers of non-permeable material. The lengths of the elongated portions of the hollow fibers are substantially less than each of the length and width dimensions of the layers of non-permeable material. A contactor module for gas-gas, gas-liquid and liquid-liquid mass transfer systems employs the hollow fiber membrane panel.

Cation exchange membranes and materials including silica-based ceramics, and associated methods, are provided. In some aspects, cation exchange membranes that include a silica-based ceramic that forms a coating on and/or within a porous support membrane are described. The cation exchange membranes and materials may have certain structural or chemical attributes (e.g., pore size/distribution, chemical functionalization) that, alone or in combination, can result in advantageous performance characteristics in any of a variety of applications for which selective transport of positively charged ions through membranes/materials is desired. In some embodiments, the silica-based ceramic contains relatively small pores (e.g., substantially spherical nanopores) that may contribute to some such advantageous properties. In some embodiments, the cation exchange membrane or material includes sulfonate and/or sulfonic acid groups covalently bound to the silica-based ceramic.

A process for removing Co2+, Pb2+, Cd2+ and Cr3+ toxins from bodily fluids is disclosed. The process involves contacting the bodily fluid with an ion exchange composition to remove the metal toxins in the bodily fluid, including blood and gastrointestinal fluid. Alternatively, blood can be contacted with a dialysis solution which is then contacted with the ion exchange composition. The ion exchange compositions are represented by the following empirical formula:
AmZraTibSncMdSixOy.
A composition comprising the above ion exchange compositions in combination with bodily fluids or dialysis solution is also disclosed. The ion exchange compositions may be supported by porous networks of biocompatible polymers such as carbohydrates or proteins.
