A monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) is produced by a method which forms multilevel conductive members, including thick low-loss metallic members. The low-loss metallic members are particularly useful for forming inductors and interconnecting circuit components. The MMIC is formed on a thick oxide layer of a silicon-on-insulator structure having a high-resistivity silicon substrate to inhibit RF interaction with the substrate.

A ballast includes safety circuitry which senses lamp status through various phases of ballast operation. According to one feature, the ballast is prevented from supplying an output voltage upon initial energization of the ballast when a lamp is not present at the output terminals. The presence of a filament is sensed via a DC path extending through the filament heater windings of an output transformer. When the DC path is not complete, a control input, for example the power supply input of the ballast controller, is not provided with a voltage to start ballast operation. The DC path is also used to restart the ballast if a defective lamp is replaced with a good one. Over-voltage and capacitive mode detection is also disclosed to shut down ballast output upon lamp failure/removal.

A high pressure gas discharge lamp and the method of making same utilizing integrated circuit fabrication techniques. The lamp is manufactured from heat and pressure resistant planar substrates in which cavities are etched, by integrated circuit manufacturing techniques, so as to provide a cavity forming the gas discharge tube. Electrodes are deposited in the cavity. The cavity is filled with gas discharge materials such as mercury vapor, sodium vapor or metal halide. The substrates are bonded together and channels may be etched in the substrate so as to provide a means for connection to the electrodes. Electrodeless RF activated lamps may also be fabricated by this technique. Micro-lasers may also be fabricated by this technique as well.

A high frequency HID ballast includes an inverter for operating the HID lamp at high frequency and an arc instability controller which detects and adjusts the operating frequency of the inverter to avoid acoustic resonance of the discharge arc. The ballast ensures that the power delivered to the lamp remains substantially constant despite variations in the gain of the inverter which occur with changes in the operating frequency. Power control is accomplished by sensing lamp power and controlling a boost converter to vary the bus voltage feeding the inverter. The boost converter is also controlled during lamp ignition, when the load provided by the HID lamp is low, to clamp the bus voltage at a predetermined level. The ballast employs universal techniques suitable for operating HID lamps of different types, wattages and manufacturers despite the occurrence of acoustic resonance/arc instabilities among these lamps over a fairly broad frequency range.

A beam combiner for an LCD projection television system makes use of a penta-prism which focuses three separate light sources on a viewing screen. The use of a penta-prism as a beam combiner allows for a compact light path, simplicity of manufacturing and a cost effective dichroic mirror arrangement as part of the penta prism. The light path within the penta-prism from the three light sources forms a right-angled triangle which provides the above-identified advantages.

The apparatus includes a voltage controlled oscillator for producing the system clock and a non-volatile memory containing an offset value. The non-volatile memory provides an offset value (representing an offset voltage value) which assures that the voltage controlled oscillator receives a voltage value which causes the frequency of the system clock to be within a specified tolerance range. The apparatus may also include a write control unit for determining and updating the offset value for a next timing recovery acquisition period. The methods include steps for performing these operations.

A lighting system having a gas discharge lamp and a stabilization ballast further includes a low loss device to reduce the current through the ballast and lamp, thereby reducing system wattage for energy savings. For a lead-type ballast, the current reducing device is a capacitive device in parallel with the discharge lamp. For a lag-type ballast, the device is an inductive device in parallel with the lamp. The device may be in a housing connected between the lamp ballast and the lamp, or may be included within the outer envelope of the discharge lamp. This enables an existing system to be easily retrofit without disturbing the existing ballast.

A dimming ballast for use with a phase control dimmer, and particularly a triac dimmer, includes an EMI filter selected with a high impedance to avoid excessive voltage and peak currents in the filter due to resonance with the phase controlled AC waveform at low conduction angles, when the load presented by the lamp is low. The EMI filter includes a filter capacitor connected at the output of a rectifier. The ballast also includes circuitry to sense the rectified DC voltage and to discharge the filter capacitor when the rectified voltage is at or near zero, to thereby keep the EMI filter loaded and prevent misfiring of the triac dimmer. In a favorable embodiment, the sensing and discharge function is carried out by a pre-conditioner of the switched-mode type.
