The light collection structures may include types of reflectors while the light directing structures may include lens features. These features may be included singly or in combination and may be provided on the exterior of the microlamp structure or on the interior of the microlamp at a light forming cavity.

A laser designed to emit a pulsed beam of short wavelength comprises two bodies of nonconductive material within a cylindrical housing, at least one of these bodies being a flat ceramic disk with a high dielectric constant. A narrow interspace between the two bodies is occupied by two coplanar metal layers with confronting rectilinear edges forming an elongate excitation cavity between them, these layers being galvanically interconnected through an inductance and constituting a pair of capacitors with a common metal layer on the opposite face of the ceramic disk. One of the coplanar layers is connected to a source of high potential, the other of these layers being intermittently energizable by a generator of trigger pulses to excite a gas filling the elongate cavity.

This invention relates to transversely-excited gas lasers, in which the gas may be at atmospheric or greater pressure and in which the gas is excited by means of a distributed electric discharge between two electrodes. The electrodes, which are preferably elongate, are such that an initial trigger discharge occurs between minor trigger portions of the electrodes which conditions the discharge gap between the electrodes resulting in a distributed, preferably glow-type discharge, between the major portions of the electrodes causing lasing action in the gas. The trigger discharge preferably generates electro-magnetic radiation of high intensity to cause volume photo-ionization of the gas. The electrodes may be composite in form, each having a trigger electrode and a main discharge electrode that are directly electrically connected to each other.

The substrates are bonded together and channels may be etched in the substrate so as to provide a means for connection to the electrodes. Electrodeless RF activated lamps may also be fabricated by this technique. Lamps fabricated from three or more planar substrates are disclosed.

In order to improve a high-frequency excited high-power laser comprising two resonator mirrors arranged opposite one another, a gas discharge chamber, a waveguide having two reflecting waveguide surfaces located opposite one another and facing the gas discharge chamber and a beam path having an initial wave bundle, which expands with spatial coherence as a wave bundle system due to multiple back and forth reflection in a transverse direction between the waveguide surfaces, such that the expansion of the wave bundle system with spatial coherence in the transverse direction at right angles to the initial direction can be achieved by other means, it is suggested that the tangents at two first waveguide surface regions reflecting the initial wave bundle, these tangents extending at right angles to the initial direction, extend parallel to one another and that a distance between second waveguide surface regions following the first waveguide surface regions which reflect the initial wave bundle become steadily larger, proceeding from the distance between the first waveguide surface regions, over an expansion path in the direction of the transverse direction with increasing expansion of the wave bundle system.

A gas laser comprises a discharge channel which is defined by two electrodes located on a dielectric layer spaced from one another. The dielectric layer forms a carrier which has a further electrode on the opposite side thereof. A laser head is connected to one end of this structure and includes a laser active gas encompassing a dielectric plate optically coupled to the discharge channel. The first of the two electrodes extends into the laser head and the last-mentioned electrode wraps around the end of the dielectric plate to the plane of the plane of the first electrode and to a point spaced therefrom to form a gap which is a surface discharge gap. The other end of the structure is connected to a high-voltage pulse generator including a switch operable to connect the two electrodes and generate a rapidly rising voltage pulse. The first of the two electrodes and the further electrode are connected to a reference potential by way of respective inductances.
