Abstract: A laser medium unit includes a laser gain medium that is formed in a plate shape, that has a first surface and a second surface, and that generates emission light upon irradiation with excitation light from the first surface; and a light guiding and cooling member connected to the first surface to guide the excitation light toward the first surface and to cool the laser gain medium. The first surface consists of a first region to which the light guiding and cooling member is thermally connected, and a second region other than the first region. An entirety of the second region is thermally isolated from the light guiding and cooling member.

Abstract: An electrically-operable laser device for emitting light at least at a wavelength includes a substrate; at least a first in-plane resonator; a first electrode; a lasing gain medium; and a second electrode. Each resonator includes at least two solid materials having an electrical conductivity below 3 S/m, wherein two or more of the solid materials differ in their refractive indices. The top surface of the first in-plane resonator is planar and has a root mean square roughness below 5 nm. The first resonator is either a) situated above the substrate, or b) comprises a material of the substrate as a first of the at least two solid materials. Any further in-plane resonators, if present, are situated above the substrate.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for producing ultrashort optical pulses are described. A high-power, solid-state, passively mode-locked laser can be manufactured in a compact module that can be incorporated into a portable instrument. The mode-locked laser can produce sub-50-ps optical pulses at a repetition rates between 200 MHz and 50 MHz, rates suitable for massively parallel data-acquisition. The optical pulses can be used to generate a reference clock signal for synchronizing data-acquisition and signal-processing electronics of the portable instrument.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for mounting a laser rod includes a mount having a cylindrical through hole in which the laser rod is disposed. A polymer is disposed in the cylindrical through hole in an annular space between an outer diameter of the laser rod and an inner diameter of the cylindrical through hole. The laser rod is suspended in a symmetrical thermal and mechanical interface. There is open access to the ends of the laser rod for end pumping and laser cavity alignment.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to various systems and methods related to preventative laser-based treatment of a dental tissue; for example, to prevent a patient from forming cavities. In some instances, a laser-based treatment system can generate a laser beam pulse with a fluence profile at a treatment site that results in either an increase in acid resistance of the tissue or removal of carbonate from the tissue, without melting or ablating the tissue. In some instances, the laser-based treatment system can direct the laser beam to various locations within a treatment site according to a temporal and/or spatial pattern, that results in either an increase in acid resistance of the tissue or removal of carbonate from the tissue, without melting or ablating the tissue. Many other systems and techniques for preventative and other laser-based treatment are also described.

Abstract: A laser resonator assembly and a method of assembly of the laser resonator assembly are described. The laser resonator assembly has a gain element and an output coupler that are placed in a gain element frame and output coupler frame, respectively. The output coupler may also be a saturable absorber element so that the laser resonator assembly emits Q-switched pulses. The frames provide heat dissipation and can be easily aligned and permanently affixed in an appropriate alignment. A laser using the laser resonator assembly can be assembled in a low-cost manner.

Abstract: Various embodiments of a multi-laser system are disclosed. In some embodiments, the multi-laser system includes a plurality of lasers, a plurality of laser beams, a beam positioning system, a thermally stable enclosure, and a temperature controller. The thermally stable enclosure is substantially made of a material with high thermal conductivity such as at least 5 W/(m K). The thermally stable enclosure can help maintain alignment of the laser beams to a target object over a range of ambient temperatures. Various embodiments of an optical system for directing light for optical measurements such laser-induced fluorescence and spectroscopic analysis are disclosed. In some embodiments, the optical system includes a thermally conductive housing and a thermoelectric controller, a plurality of optical fibers, and one or more optical elements to direct light emitted by the optical fibers to illuminate a flow cell. The housing is configured to attach to a flow cell.

Abstract: The invention discloses a visible laser apparatus including a linear cavity. The linear cavity includes along the first direction: a first optical component, a gain medium, a second optical component, a Raman crystal, a double-harmonic crystal and a third optical component. The first optical component receives an incident pumping light in the first direction. The gain medium receives the pumping light from the first optical component, and generates a first infrared base laser having a first wavelength. The second optical component has a first high transmittance in a first wave band including the first wavelength in the first and the second directions. The Raman crystal receives the first infrared base laser, and generates a second infrared base laser having a second wavelength. The double-harmonic crystal receives the first and the second infrared base lasers, and generates a visible laser light having a third wavelength.
