The invention comprises vat dyestuffs that contain at least one substituent imparting solubility in water, at least one aryl residue bound through an oxygen atom and two anthraquinone residues (including anthrone residues having four or more fused rings) which are joined together by an -NH-X-NH- bridge in which X is the residue of an organic di- or tri-basic acid. Examples include sulphonated bis-(aryloxyanthraquinonylamino)triazines and sulphonated bis - (anthraquinonylamino) derivatives of dicarboxylic acids such as oxalic, succinic, terephthalic, diphenyl-4: 41-dicarbo-oxylic and thiophene 2: 5-dicarboxylic acids. The dyes are made by sulphonation of an appropriate vat dye, by reacting a phenol or naphthol with a suitable halo- or nitro-vat dye or by acylating an aryloxyaminoanthraquinone with a di- or tribasic carboxylic acid and, if necessary, sulphonating the product, or by sulphating or acylating with an acylating agent containing a water-solubilizing group an appropriate vat dye containing a hydroxy group. The dyes dye cellulose ethers and esters, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile and polyurethane fibres, wool and silk but particularly cotton by the vat-dyeing process.

There are described new anthraquinone compounds which, in the form of the free acid, correspond to the formula I ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 is a straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl group having 4 to 8 carbon atoms, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 independently of one another are each a straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R.sub.4 is hydrogen, an optionally acylated amino group, or a fibre-reactive radical bound by way of an amino group, and R.sub.5 is hydrogen, or a straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and also the production thereof by selective desulfonation from an anthraquinonedisulfonic acid; and the use of the new anthraquinone compounds as dyes for dyeing and printing textile materials.

There are described new violet water-soluble anthraquinone dyes corresponding to the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents a straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl group having 4 to 8 carbon atoms,R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 independently of one another represent a straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms,R.sub.4 represents hydrogen, an optionally acylated amino group, or a fibre-reactive radical bonded by way of an amino group,R.sub.5 represents hydrogen or a straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and the phenyl ringsA and/or B can be further substituted, with the proviso that one X of the symbols X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 represents the --SO.sub.3 H -- group, and the other X represents hydrogen; and also a process for producing these dyes by means of a phenol melt; and the use of the new water-soluble anthraquinone dyes for dyeing and printing textile materials, particularly natural and synthetic polyamide materials.

THE DYESTUFFS ARE ESPECIALLY SUITABLE FR USE IN DYEING HYDROXYL OR NITROGEN CONTAINING TEXTILE MATERIALS, ESPECIALLY NATURAL AND REGENERATED CELLULOSE, WOOL, SILK, SYNTHETIC POLYAMIDE AND POLYURETHANE FIBERS THEREBY YIELDING DYEINGS OF EXCELLENT FASTNESS PROPERTIES.
