A slightly puffed, low density, moisture-absorbing and odor-absorbing additive that can readily remove undesirable odors from a confined space is produced from re-purposed spent carbon materials obtained from other processes. The product is particularly suitable as an addition to animal litters and the like with possible uses in human applications. An aspect of the method includes a step of extruding a spent carbon mixture, optionally containing diatomaceous earth to obtain the additive. Also disclosed are de-germinated corn flour, or grits, that aid process flow and can serve as a substrate for the spent carbon materials.

Method and apparatus for the production of containers are disclosed. A container blow molding element can concurrently produce a plurality of containers. Two adjacent containers are disposed a first distance apart. A container conveying element can receive the plurality of containers at predetermined container locations. The predetermined container locations corresponding to the two adjacent containers are disposed a second distance apart. A transition element can transfer the plurality of containers from the blow molding element to the container conveying element. The distance between the two adjacent containers is altered from the first distance to the second distance after the plurality of containers is removed from the blow molding element and before the plurality of containers is received by the container conveying element.

The foam molded product is a molded product containing a resin and including a surface layer, a compressive deformation layer, and a foam layer. The thickness of the surface layer is 0.1 mm to 5.0 mm. The compressive deformation layer is located between the surface layer and the foam layer. Foam particles forming the compressive deformation layer have an average H/L of 0.5 or less (H: length in compression direction; L: length in perpendicular direction relative to compression direction). Foam particles forming the foam layer have an expansion ratio of not less than 3.0 times and less than 30 times.

Method and apparatus for treating discrete granules of thermoplastic material, such as polystyrene, to form articles of desired shapes and forms. The granules, containing a blowing agent, are rapidly preheated to about their softening temperature and immediately deposited into a mold which is preferably also preheated. After enclosure in the mold, the material is insufflated with steam to cause expansion and cohesion of the granules to create the desired shape or form such as blocks, plates, sheets and specially-shaped articles as determined by the molding means. The steam may be saturated, under pressure, or superheated and at atmospheric pressure. In the latter case the temperature is about that of the softening point of the material, such as 115* C in the case of polystyrene, and the method can be carried out without use of an autoclave and in a continuous procedure. The granules may be preheated and conveyed to the mold, at one and the same time, by entraining them with heated gas, thus conveying them in and through a duct, into the mold. The entraining gas, such as air, may be at a temperature above the softening point of the granules, provided the time of transit from supply hopper to mold is small and just long enough to effect the desired temperature of preheat to the granules.

The die may include a die flow channel extending from a first end to a second end of the die and coupled to a die housing of an extruder. The outlet adaptor is receivable within the die flow channel and includes first and second ends and an outlet flow channel. The first end of the outlet adaptor cooperates with the die flow channel at the second end of the die to retain the outlet adaptor. A diameter of the outlet flow channel expands at the second end of the outlet adaptor to create a pressure drop to form the foamed article. The die outlet assembly is coupled to the outlet adaptor and includes a bore that receives a polymer from the outlet adaptor. The die outlet assembly produces a cylindrical foam article having a natural skin.
