Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for use in trimming of flash from molded thermoplastic records. The records which are advantageously trimmed using the apparatus of this invention have the flash secured to the outer diameter of the molded record with a web having a thickness which is substantially less than the thickness of the molded record and the principal portion of the flash. The apparatus of this invention has a turntable for holding the record during trimming and a manifold means for directing a heated gas over the web so as to selectively heat and soften the web thereby facilitating the trimming of the flash and final finishing of the outer diameter of the record.

Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for trimming flash from molded thermoplastic records. The records which are advantageously trimmed using the apparatus of this invention have the flash secured to the outer diameter of the molded record with a web having a thickness which is substantially less than the thickness of the molded record and the principle portion of the flash. The apparatus of this invention has a rotatable turntable means for holding a record to be trimmed and a focused infrared heating means positioned relative to the turntable so as to selectively heat and soften the web prior to trimming. The softening of the web facilitates trimming the flash and the final finishing of the molded thermoplastic record.

Abstract: This relates to a container which is formed of a thermoplastic material, preferably PET, wherein the container wall and flanges have a high degree of orientation and the required strength characteristics utilizing a minimum of resin in the formation thereof. An intermediate article of manufacture is formed with this article having a generally bottle-like configuration. The intermediate article of manufacture, which is blow molded from a conventional preform configuration, includes a lower portion in the configuration of the desired container and an upper portion which is an accommodation portion. The accommodation portion is removed from the container and becomes scrap which is reground. Abstract: A novel decorative panel and method of manufacture in which a wood panel is grooved, the groove filled by synthetic inlay material which is permitted to cure to the approximate hardness of the wood, the entire surface of the panel is thereafter abraded to create a simulated wood grain in the inlay material, and the inlay material thereafter permitted to cure to a hardness greater than that of the wood so that a subsequent polishing operation will remove the scratches from the wood to display the natural wood grain without removing the wood grain simulating scratches from the inlay material.

Abstract: A blow molding machine is disclosed for hollow plastic articles. The machine includes a clamp mechanism for a pair of mold sections. It comprises a body disposed below an extruder at an extruding station and a blow pin at a blow station and carrying opposed platens for supporting the mold sections. Each of a pair of levers is pivotally coupled with a respective platen and with the body and the levers are connected together by a pull bar. An actuating means displaces one of the platens relative to the body and equal and opposite motion is transmitted through the levers and the pull bar to the other platen for opening and closing the clamp. A lifting mechanism supports the clamp for movement between the extruding station and the blow station. The lifting mechanism is adapted for vertical motion by a hydraulic motor acting on a lifting frame. The frame is mounted by pivot links on the machine base and pairs of links are connected by a shaft with a crank arm, the crank arms being connected together by a tie rod. The flash is removed from the formed article by power actuated punching means. A first punch is carried on a transfer mechanism for transferring the article from the blow station to a receiving station and a second punch is located at the receiving station.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for molding plastic containers and the like and for removing unwanted flash material therefrom. In the molding step, an unwanted tail flash portion is molded to have a weakened area along the line of attachment to the bottom of the container. After ejection from the mold, the container is conveyed to a tail removal device that grips and tears the tail free from the container along the weakened line area by a downward and rearward force.

Abstract: An example of the shock resistant transparent polymer sphere is a billiard or pool ball. The molding apparatus includes lower and upper mold halves defining juxtaposed concave hemispherical surfaces to define a spherical mold cavity with a top fill opening on the upper mold half. Interlocking of the mold halves together is accomplished by tongue and window structures circumferentially spaced about the meeting points of the two halves at 120.degree.. A holder in the form of an annular ring is provided for supporting a central disc provided with a symbol on each of its opposite faces. The design is such that the ring when positioned in the spherical cavity defined by the mold halves supports the disc with its center coincident with the center of the spherical cavity. The molded sphere is made by a single pouring operation of resin through the fill opening, the disc and ring being encapsulated within the sphere. The composition of the resulting product is such that a bonding takes place between the disc, ring and resin material for the sphere resulting in a final sphere in which shock is absorbed by the disc, supporting ring, ink utilized in forming the symbol on the opposite faces of the disc as well as the resin as though the entire sphere were homogeneous throughout.

Abstract: Method and apparatus is provided for trimming flash material from plastic containers while the containers remain on a continuously moving conveyor. A pair of grasping arms hold a single container in a stationary position on the conveyor preparatory to engagement and trimming by a deflasher mechanism. The deflasher mechanism has a pair of cam operated nest members which close around the container in the area to be trimmed and hold it in a fixed position as a knife member associated with one of the nest members trims the flash. Opening and closing of the platens is effected by means of rotary actuators mounted in cams of the respective platens. The cam of one of the platens follows while the cam of the other platen follows, in part, an arcuate path causing a lost motion during part of the movement of the rotary actuator.
