An apparatus and method for the manufacture of composite flywheels. The apparatus includes an inner cylinder, an outer cylinder, a fiber feeding device and a knitting device. The fiber feeding device includes a set of conical feed rollers for feeding hoop fibers to the cylinders. The knitting device employs a circular knitting machine fitted with a radial fiber guide for feeding the radial fibers to the cylinders. The apparatus also includes structure for raising and lowering the needles of the knitting machine at the proper times to effectively feed the radial fibers to the cylinders. The fiber feeding device and knitting device interact to provide layers of hoop and radial fibers to the cylinders to form a flywheel pre-form including a combination of radial and hoop fibers without introducing crimp into the fibers.

A composite-based rim and methods for manufacturing such a rim are provided. The rim includes multiple fiber-based, co-mingled layers, wherein the strength and/or stiffness of the layers increases from the innermost layer of the rim to the outermost layer of the rim, but where the radial stress and strain generated in the rim decreases from the innermost layer to the outermost layer. Incorporation of this rim into a high stress and strain usage environment, such as a flywheel system, allows the rim to be spun at high speeds in order to generate high levels of kinetic energy while beneficially managing the amount of strain and radial stresses generated within the rim, and, in turn, minimizing or at least controlling the formation and propagation of cracks within the rim.

The present invention discloses a bearing damping system for damping vibrations and conducting heat from vibration-producing, heat-generating devices, an evacuated energy storage system including such a bearing damping system for damping vibrations produced by the rotating shaft and conducting heat from bearings and/or bearing assemblies; and a method for damping vibrations and conducting heat from vibration-producing, heat-generating devices. In one aspect of the present invention, the system includes one or more flexible bearing dampers in combination with one or more heat transferring rosettes. The flexible, e.g., elastomeric, bearing dampers minimize the rigid body critical velocity, which further minimizes the amplitude of the vibrations so that relatively high damping energy is required. The heat transferring rosettes comprises a flexible thermally conductive member that transfers heat by conduction from the bearings, bearing assemblies and/or heat generating devices to a remote heat sink. Preferably, the flexible thermally conductive member comprises a first end of a thermally conductive member that is thermally coupled directly to the heat-generating device, a second end f a thermally conductive member that is thermally coupled directly or indirectly to the remote heat sink and a third conductive member therebetween.

The present invention involves a mechanical and electrical arrangement for an energy efficient powertrain that reduces fuel consumption and environmental impact. The powertrain consists of a power and torque capacitor, using a flywheel that is fully isolated from the power production elements. The powertrain consists of a mechanically isolated flywheel, a power unit and a power receiving device which can be selectively connected and disconnected through use of electromagnetic joints. The joints are configured to mechanically isolate the power receiving device, the flywheel and the power plant from one another. As a result, the drive shaft to the power plant drives the flywheel through the torque transfer joint at an RPM greater than the maximum RPM for the flywheel. Likewise, the flywheel's minimum speed would be greater than that required for the power receiving device as defined by its rotation rate. The respective electromagnetic joints would also be operated as generators/motors so that differential rates between the main drive shaft and the flywheels are sensed, and those joints are activated to provide torque to the flywheel. In addition, the invention provides a new construction for flywheels and containers to maximize safety while reducing the weight load requirements for the flywheel and its container.
