摘要: A charging system (20) of an internal combustion engine has a compressor (22) that compresses intake air (41) to a pressure higher than a boost pressure of the internal combustion engine. A first energy recovery turbine (25) recovers energy from an exhaust gas mass flow (45) discharged from a cylinder (12). The compressor (22) and the first energy recovery turbine (25) are disposed on a first shaft (31) and the recovered energy is transmitted directly to the compressor (22). A cooling turbine (24) expands and cools the (intake) air (41) compressed by the compressor (22) to the boost pressure required by the cylinder (12). A second energy recovery turbine (26) recovers energy from the exhaust gas mass flow (45). The second energy recovery turbine (26) and the cooling turbine (24) are on a common second shaft (32), and the second shaft (32) is coupled to at least one energy sink.

摘要: An internal combustion engine system includes an internal combustion engine, a first turbine unit receiving exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine, the turbine unit having a compressor for compressing intake air and feeding the intake air by an air intake line to the internal combustion engine, and an exhaust gas recirculation line connecting the air intake line with an exhaust as line of the internal combustion engine at a position upstream the first turbine unit. A bypass line connects the exhaust gas recirculation line to the exhaust gas line at a position downstream of the turbine unit, the bypass line having an arrangement for controlling the exhaust gas flow from the exhaust gas recirculation line to the exhaust gas line.

摘要: A system includes a controller that is configured to respond to engine load being at a designated engine load point by operating an engine with a lower exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) amount and a more advanced fuel injection timing than any other steady-state engine load point when EGR and fuel injection are enabled. The controller is further configured to respond to engine load being within a range of engine load points around the designated engine load point by increasing the EGR amount and retarding fuel injection timing as load increases and as load decreases away from the designated engine load point. This may result in decreased fuel consumption while maintaining emissions below designated levels.

摘要: An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block defining first and second cylinders, and a cylinder head coupled to the block. The engine also includes a passage having a first outlet and a second outlet for exhausting post-combustion gasses from the cylinder head. The engine additionally includes a mechanism for selectively activating and deactivating the first cylinder and a turbocharging system having a low-flow turbocharger and a high-flow turbocharger. The low-flow turbocharger is driven by gasses from the first outlet and the high-flow turbocharger is driven by gasses from the second outlet. The turbocharging system also includes a first flow-control device that directs the gasses via the first and second outlets to the turbochargers when the first and second cylinders are activated. The first flow-control device also directs the gasses via the first outlet only to the low-flow turbocharger and blocks the second outlet when the first cylinder is deactivated.

摘要: A turbocharger system comprises a first relatively small turbocharger and a second relatively large turbocharger connected in series and an exhaust gas flow control valve. The exhaust control valve has an inlet port communicating with the exhaust gas flow upstream of the first turbine a first outlet port communicating with the exhaust flow downstream of said first turbine but upstream of said second turbine, and a second outlet port communicating with the exhaust flow downstream of said second turbine. The valve is operable to selectively permit or block flow through the first and second outlet ports.

The low pressure stage (60) has a divided scroll turbine wheel (62) with each scroll fed independently from the respective turbines of the high pressure stages. Valves V1, V2 determine flow paths to the respective turbines to ensure series, sequential operation.
