Abstract: A thin film may include a high toughness and a high air permeability, e.g., when applied to skin, and may be used as a functional member or an electronic functional member. The thin film may include fibers, which may be formed into a net shape constituting a fibrous net, and a coating film, which may be formed on the surfaces of the fibers and in gaps between the fibers. The fibers may be formed by an electrospinning method. The fibers may be formed by using any of a polyurethane, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) derivative, and a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as a material. The coating film may be formed by using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a material. A conductive film, which may be formed on a part of all of the coating film, may also be provided.

Abstract: A conductive carbonaceous fiber is provided, comprising a carbonaceous material obtained from carbonizing an electrospun fiber wherein said fiber comprises at least one conductive metal precursor. The electrospun fibers can be formed into fibrous mats during spinning, stabilization and carbonization that are conductive materials which can be used to make stretchable conductors for flexible electronic devices. The invention relates also to the process for making the fibers, corresponding elastomeric fibrous mesh/polymer composites as well as use of these composites for making stretchable electrical conductors. The obtainable elastomeric composite films (with a thickness in the range of 0.8 to 1.5 mm) exhibit good electrical conductivity and excellent electromechanical stability under mechanical deformations (e.g. elongating, twisting and bending). The scalable fabrication process and low-cost precursors make the elastic electrospun carbon fibers/polymer composite conductors promising materials for applications in flexible electronic devices, displays, sensors, wearable conducting clothes, implantable medical devices, etc.

Abstract: This present invention is directed to the use of bio-based materials such as functionalized plant oils and natural fibers to provide substitutes for leather materials. The bio-based materials provide composites made with a range of natural fibers such as flax, cotton, jute and kenaf fibers, combined with natural plant oils (triglycerides) such as soy oil, linseed oil and their fatty acids. The natural fibers may be used in their as-delivered woven or nonwoven state and the triglycerides and fatty acids are chemically modified to allow them to react in a controlled manner giving predictable thermal and mechanical properties. The resulting material is a breathable, water resistant, leather-like material. This present invention is also directed to methods of making the substitutes for leather materials.
