A fastener for use in joining dissimilar materials manufactured by the process of producing the fastener with an external surface that forms an electrically insulating oxide layer when subjected to oxidation and, after manufacture and prior to use, subjecting the fastener to a pre-oxidation process to grow the desired oxide layer in situ on the external surface of the fastener. The present invention also provides a dissimilar material joint in which the pre-oxidized fastener is used to mechanically join dissimilar materials with the oxide layer electrically insulating the fastener from at least one of the dissimilar materials. The fastener may be a rivet used in friction self-piercing riveting (F-SPR). The fastener may be fabricated from an alloy capable of forming Al2O3 or Cr2O3 by thermal oxidation. The fastener may be pre-coated with Al or Cr that functions as a seed layer to form Al2O3 or Cr2O3.

This method includes a plasma step which includes placing a metallic base having processed surfaces obtained by processing in a vacuum chamber, generating plasma in the vacuum chamber, and subjecting the metallic base to plasma treatment at a temperature of the metallic base adjusted to 280 to 325° C. to sharpen the processed surfaces to thereby obtain an edged tool precursor, and an oxidation step which includes reducing an internal temperature of the vacuum chamber to a specific temperature ranging from 100 to 225° C. after completion of generation of the plasma, and introducing an oxygen-containing gas into the vacuum chamber to form an oxide film on surfaces of the edged tool precursor.

There is provided a chromium-containing austenitic alloy wherein at least one surface of the surfaces of the alloy has a continuous chromium oxide film with a thickness of 5 nm or more and less than 50 nm. A maximum current density determined by a critical passivation current density method is 0.1 μA/cm2 or less when the chromium oxide film is continuous. A chemical composition of a base metal preferably consists of, by mass percent, C: 0.15% or less, Si: 1.00% or less, Mn: 2.0% or less, P: 0.030% or less, S: 0.030% or less, Cr: 10.0 to 40.0%, Ni: 8.0 to 80.0%, Ti: 0.5% or less, Cu: 0.6% or less, Al: 0.5% or less, and N: 0.20% or less, the balance being Fe and impurities.

A high-strength cold-rolled steel sheet having high chemical convertibility and a tensile strength of 590 MPa or more and a method for producing such a steel sheet are provided. The steel sheet contains, in terms of percent by mass, C: 0.05 to 0.3%, Si: 0.6 to 3.0%, Mn: 1.0 to 3.0%, P: 0.1% or less, S: 0.05% or less, Al: 0.01 to 1%, N: 0.01% or less, and the balance being Fe and unavoidable impurities. The coverage ratio of reduced iron on a steel sheet surface is 40% or more. In order to produce such a steel sheet, an oxidation treatment is performed after cold rolling. Subsequently, annealing is conducted in a furnace in a 1 to 10 vol % H2+balance N2 gas atmosphere with a dew point of −25° C. or less.

Formation of the selective coating includes a surface treatment step of the substrate, by polishing, and a heat treatment step of the substrate, in an oxidizing atmosphere, in a temperature range included between 550° C. and 650° C. The heat treatment in particular enables at least one intrinsically selective superficial thin layer to be formed on the outer surface of the substrate.
